replacement starter grinds when cold

Replaced the starter on the '98 Honda Accord (4 cylinder) a few months ago. When it's cold it grinds when the engine starts, like it's not disengaging fast enough. Sounds like when you accidentlly hit the starter when the motor is running - that type of grinding. But it only does it when the engine is cold.

Should I take the starter back off and lube it and with what? Or complain to the auto parts store? Or should I have gotten a genuine Honda starter and not a remanufactured one?

do not assume starter has shims? older GM cars did. sounds like solenoid assy is hanging up. could replace it and see. but here you are. original starter is gone. maybe should have rebuilt it? too late.

The original starter did not have shims, if that helps.

The X304 uses the 17hp V-twin Kawasaki. To the OP, did you charge the original battery? As in, not just leaving jumper cables on, but charging it with a charger?? Also, check all the connections to the starter and the battery. And make sure the negative cable is connected to negative terminal on the battery, and that the positive cable is connected to the positive terminal on the battery.

hello all : Been looking at this page for a while - and was inspired to try something I read - a wild yeast captured from Caraway seeds. After 5 days and a few additions of my own - think I have a live sponge - Started with soaking FRONTIERS ORGANIC Caraway seeds ( I read this - dont remember what site - said organic would be sun dried as to heat dried) in some water in jar - dash of flour - not really sure why next morning drained seeds , added 1/2 of flour closed cap of jar and shook to mix - within 1 hr I had froth - next day still frothy - so put into bigger jar and added 1/2 flour and water - shook to mix - cracked lid for outgas - very frothy and smelled like fermentation next day less froth strong fermentation smell - so added some apple cider vinegar from a dropper I was cleaning out - secured cap and shook - cracked lid for outgas - next day, little movement but lots of hooch and strong fermentation smell - so I added more vinegar , did the mixing etc... this morning I was making bread with yeast - decided to play with the concoction - used up organic fruit juice sweetened apricot fruit jam jar took 1/2 of the mix I started - just shook that to mix and cracked the lid - could smell a touch of vinegar in the mix - the main jar I just added some home stone ground white winter wheat flour - maybe 2 tablespoons and mixed with wooded spatula I mixed the yeast dough I had started last nite -now thick like pancake batter - just checked it a moment ago and appears to be live and starting to bubble I shall report back tomorrow with more result - thought those might be interested in my experiment cheers:

Correction: I use HALF a cup of beans to grind coffee for 3 cups of coffee, not a whole cup of beans. I would prefer a glass container for the ground coffee, but don't find the plastic on in the Cuisinart a big problem so far. The plastic container for the whole beans is of no consequence to me. It's grinding evenly, and a setting just south of "Medium" grinds fine enough for me. The roar is a waker-upper. Think of an old cartoon where a character has upset a hive -- only *louder*. The most important feature of any drip coffee maker is its' ability to heat the water to the right temperature and keep it there to the finish. You also need good water. Our tap water is great, but I still draw from the filtered water dispenser in our refridgerator door. I only want coffee brewed NOW, not an hour later, and not 'kept hot' on a hot plate. My old Krups drips into a pre-heated thermos carafe that I can then seal tight. I don't find that feature on any 'grind and brew' makers. (Some have thermos carafes, but they don't seal.) We would probably be good candidates for the single cup capsules, but I'm too cheap to pay more for the maker or the capsules!

A lot of bad info in recent comments... "Speed oven is a type of microwave." No. A speed oven is not at a microwave of any sort. Speed ovens are often combined with a microwave but the speed oven is totally different technology, usually light. Combi Speed/MW have an advantage in being able to use both technologies to produce food that is enjoyable to eat and retains nutritional value. "Microwaves give off radiation, destroys nutrients in food." No. From a purely nutritional standpoint cooking in a microwave is extremely good and preserves nutrients better than most forms of cooking. There are dozens or hundreds of studies on this that you can find online. That said, I don't like the taste and texture of microwaved food. For veggies steaming is nearly equally as good as microwave from a nutritional standpoint but produces more enjoyable food to eat. I also love to roast veggies but roasting does reduce the nutritional value significantly more than steam or MW. ---- From an overall health standpoint, ANY harm from a microwave (and we still don't know if there is or not) is likely far less than that from traditional cooking (induction, gas or electric coil) with a poor range exhaust hood that results in VOC's and Carcinogens spread throughout your house.

why did it fail before? sure your flexplate teeth are ok? flexplate is not warped/bent? all else, take it back. thats what warranties are for.

The original one developed a bad spot on the armature. Most of the time it was OK, but sometimes you'd hit the key and nothing. Hit the key multiple times, and eventually it would catch. At least that's what the Honda dealer said the problem was. They wanted ~$450 to put in a starter, so thought I'd do it myself.

Afraid I'd take it back, the parts store would say there's nothing wrong with it. But I don't want damage done to the flywheel teeth.

common for budget units to not perform well. not saying flexplate is problem but i think your bendix drive is the issue.

Although the original starter did not have a shim(s), the starter you now have may need those. If the mounting surfaces of the replaement starter has been machined (during the rebuild), it probably needs shims.

When the gear teeth do not mesh properly, those will make a groaning sound while cranking the engine. If the teeth are shoved too deeply together, binding occurs and excessive wear results on both sets of teeth. Also, increased loading appears on the starter bearing.

The pinion and gear should meet at their pitch circles.

Honda starters do not use shims. Honda DOES NOT RECOMMEND
after market starters on any of their vehicles. An after market starter should last one year if you use one. Maybe. The drive engage pitch is metric but which one ? Europe,
Japanese,or British ?

Thanks for the input. Think I'll take the starter off this weekend and see if they will give me another one.

It worked OK from July until a couple months ago. Only makes noise when it's cold first thing in the morning or after sitting several hours outside. And it's right when the engine fires that it grinds - not while cranking. Once the car has been driven a few miles, it sounds normal upon a warm restart.

Just wish that one bolt wasn't hard to get to.
