Glass doors on oven shattered - TWICE!!!

I am not sure where to post this so I am starting here and am hoping for some direction. We built a second home 5 years ago and use if for vacations. We started with a NEW GE oven. It was used about 10 times before the glass in the door shattered. Thinking it was the make/model we replaced the oven with a VIking. Well... the very same thing has happened with the Viking. Fortunately the Viking was still under warranty and they are replacing the door. However, I am wondering what is going on - two different manufactures and the SAME THING happening. Neither ovens were used much at all. In addition, my daughter (in her 30s) was making an egg in the microwave last week and the egg exploded. The temp was set correctly as was the time. Can a house have electrical surges that would cause these things to happen? Can anyone steer me in a direction to check what is going on? I need help, please....

If the egg was in the shell or the yolk was not pierced, no surprise it popped.

No on the surge for the oven, it is engineered to handle the heat from self clean, a much higher temp than a surge result. A surge would damage electrical components and not really raise the temp. Uneven pressure on the door frame, possibly from improper leveling of the body at installation is more likely, but still relatively unusual. Check if the door closes perfectly flat against the body or is racked.

Any chance you nicked the edge? Tempered glass is pretty tough stuff *except* for the edges. Twice I have found out the hard way - once with the cold frame and later in the greenhouse - than any minute damage to the edge results in a million+ little pieces. Maybe there was latent damage and you just happened to be in the right place at the wrong time, so to speak. Cheers

I must admit, my hopes were that I would receive the Electrolux Icon oven panel with glass and have our oven fixed before Mother’s day…till Parts Warehouse called me back yesterday to let me know I had the choice to wait another month (without certainty) or get a refund…I chose the latter one, and now I will begin searching for a new oven. I feel we have been ripped-off badly…using what we thought was a top of the line oven lasted less than 4 years. My guess is that the same can happen with any electronic cookware, unless you buy additional coverage.

Bosch oven door glass shattered during self clean

Last weekend my 3-year old top of the line Bosch 800 series combination convection wall oven (model HBL8751UCC) introduced us to a secret Bosch recipe for preparing meat. About 15 minutes into cooking two trays of steak, the inner sheet of glass in the oven shattered into a thousand small pieces, showering the meat with delicious chunks of broken glass! After discussing the issue with my Bosch representative all I got was an apology and a 20% discount on buying a replacement piece of glass (no discount at all for the labor). Looking at the internet, it became clear that Bosch has been using the secret glass recipe in their ovens for about 10 years now, and it's apparently such a big hit with consumers that the company has decided not to make any changes to their recipe. Ahhh, there have been other issues with this oven, like the ever dimming display on the microwave control panel (now barely visible) and the weird way that closing the microwave door would sometimes turn the lower oven on (a ghost in the machine?). A word to the wise--if you're thinking of buying a Bosch oven, you might want to consider some other brands--unless you like the taste of glass in your favorite recipes.

This information came from wikipedia. It is a well written article and to the best of my knowledge is factual. The original Pyrex type of low thermal expansion glass was first discovered in 1893 by Otto Schott, a German. He founded a company using his name and produced this glass under the name, Duran. It was a borosilicate glass. This low expansion glass was favored for lab ware, battery cases, and other containers that benefitted from this property. The Corning Co. removed the lead from the glass and began to produce cookware under the tradename, Pyrex. Pyrex has enjoyed a long history of trusted thermal gradient resistant glass, that is, until 1998. Corning quit making cookware and licensed Pyrex to several manufacturers. Some of these makers slapped the name Pyrex on their soda-lime glass, an ordinary glass. These days, you can not trust any product made after 1998 with the name Pyrex unless it states that it is borosilicate glass. This information came from wikipedia. Thanks to you both for your comments. As for the egg - it was scrambled before putting it in the microwave.

On the surge... was hoping this was the problem and could be resolved but apparently not. Seems unlikely that BOTH ovens would have the same leveling problem. But, maybe. When they come to install the new door we will have them double check this.

Anyone have other ideas out there???

That is so funny! There actually IS an Indian burial ground just across a little lake from us. Maybe I need to do some sort of ritual dance for the G-ds. Terri

most likely operator error - though I can't think of a scenario off hand that would cause it.

eggs are notorious for exploding in microwave, this has been know since the 70's when Amana rolled out the Radarange.
