I am sorry but happy you didn't injure yourself.
I had a pyrex dish shatter on Christmas but it was because I set the very hot dish full of rutabegas on a cold marble slab without thinking about it.
I bought some Anchor Hocking bowls last week and there is a notice about a lot of things that could cause the shattering.
I think you can find articles about the whys online.

YIKES! I hate when that happens I will find little slivers for quite awhile no matter how well I clean. I am glad you did not get hurt. Did you make the brownies?

My husband & I have broken three different pieces of glasswear over the past month - a Corelle casserole lid, a small salad dish & a wineglass. Things like this come in 3's so be forewarned! It is a PITA to clean up shattered glass & our kitchen floor is ceramic tile - nothing that falls on it survives.

If you're like me, you will continue to discover little fragments, even in areas you cleaned up and farther away than you'd think.

Petaloid, you are sooo right. Harry dropped a glass in the kitchen and I vacuumed the tile twice, mopped it and did swept and mopped a few days later. When in the world does it come from?

Oh dear, what a mess. I feel so sorry for you. Glad you were not injured but what a royal pain all that clean up. May I suggest investing in plastic or metal mixing bowls. They're much lighter in weight, easier to deal with, a snap to clean and they don't break. LOL

A friend who worked as an OR nurse suggested using a damp towel and lightly dragging it across the floor to pick up unseen objects, such as contact lenses. She said they did that in the OR to find dropped needles.

I'll bet that made you jump. I wonder if it had a small crack in it. Do be careful about those glass slivers. I dropped a picture frame with glass in my bedroom about a year ago. Just today the sun shone off a tiny piece I noticed as I was dusting. A couple months ago I found a sliver with the bottom of my foot but I felt it before I stepped down hard. I have cleaned and cleaned in there but those slivers keep turning up.

They do that. Pyrex is under a lot of internal stress and if it gets a scratch in the right place and then a knock it will give up the ghost in spectacular fashion.

It was a set we received as a wedding gift in '94 so I definitely got my money's worth from them. Now though with the ten remaining bowls from the set I will probably look at them with distrust knowing they could go like that without any warning or reason.

The original Pyrex type of low thermal expansion glass was first discovered in 1893 by Otto Schott, a German. He founded a company using his name and produced this glass under the name, Duran. It was a borosilicate glass. This low expansion glass was favored for lab ware, battery cases, and other containers that benefitted from this property. The Corning Co. removed the lead from the glass and began to produce cookware under the tradename, Pyrex.

Pyrex has enjoyed a long history of trusted thermal gradient resistant glass, that is, until 1998. Corning quit making cookware and licensed Pyrex to several manufacturers. Some of these makers slapped the name Pyrex on their soda-lime glass, an ordinary glass.

These days, you can not trust any product made after 1998 with the name Pyrex unless it states that it is borosilicate glass.

Wow, Bob I'm so glad you're okay!!! Having it break just by moving it is terrifying.

I'm so careful about setting anything hot on even a cool surface, or my dishrag if it's damp. That's one of the worst dangers, setting it on a damp towel.

My landlady and I were cleaning out her Mom's belongings and she offered my her Pyrex Vision cooking pot. I asked about them here, and I remember that they've had an exploding issue too, so I didn't take it.

I'm glad you didn't get cut too. I was also wondering how it broke so easily, just from handling, but seems it was explained. I use Pyrex every day, but what I have is the old bowls....colored ones and some very old clear baking dishes.

I was driving on a freeway in Houston a few days ago and I guess this block of wood flew off of a passing truck. It hit my truck, but not on the glass. I was thinking if it had hit my door window, it would have probably shattered it. From what I saw of it, it was a good sized chunk about
8 inches long by 4" square.

I had the same thing happen here while back with the same type of bowl as your's... I threw the rest of them away and bought new ones. Mine were several years old too. A new set doesn't cost all that much.

I looked more closely at the bowls and they are "Duralex" bowls (from France) rather than Pyrex brand. They have never been used in the oven, only for food prep and serving. I'm not sure if I want to try to replace just the broken one or replace the entire set, with another identical one, or to replace the set with a different brand and material.

I went with the metal bowls recently, I have had to clean up glass too often and you just never can get up all those pieces that go every where.
They have the metal ones now that have a rubber coating on the bottoms so they don't scoot around, very nice. And they look nice sitting out too. Of course there are varying qualities in those too. OXO good grips makes a nice quality set. Chefs also makes a nice set.
