what should I use for my vanity top and shower seat?

We are putting in a marble bathroom (carrara marble on the floor, with marble mosaics and same marble up the walls of the shower). I had wanted to match the marble as closely as possible for our vanity top and the shower seat, but the price on the vanity top came in (lowest bid so far) at $1800 and the shower seat another $450. That was for a statuary marble (closest looking to our marble). White carrara would bring it down to $1200 and $250. However, we've already gone over budget, and it just seems so expensive. Is there another surface someone can suggest that we look at that might go nicely with an otherwise carrara bathroom (the mosaic has grey blue and grey green accents, and the walls will be grey-green, with mahogany vanity and window trim).

okay, so I went to the home depot or lowes site and did an online calculator for how much a solid surface (their calculator did it for silestone) would cost. The price on that was only a hundred or two less than the marble!

Any other ideas? Or are we going to be stuck with plywood???!

We are using granite counters in our bathroom remodel project, including an 8 x 3 vanity with back splash, so I can provide you with an approximate comparison. Based on our quote, after re-scaling the square footage to your vanity dimensions, I arrive at a total fabrication cost of $1,596. Roughly 25% ($399) of the total cost is for the actual material (marble in your case); the remaining $1,197 is template/fabrication/installation labor. That also includes a complex Ogee edge along the vanity's front. This is just a ballpark figure, since costs vary by region for both raw material and labor. Depends on what look you're going for - contemporary? Then spend the $ now on frameless doors and get them installed. More traditional? Then do a shower curtain(s) and frame your mirrors. It's not that hard to do (I did it with a huge jigsaw puzzle in ds's nursery) after the mirrors are on the wall, as long as there's room. Only thing is you want to paint the back of the trim black so you don't see reflection of the wood where it overlaps the mirror. A mirror will be thicker than the jigsaw puzzle, so you'll need to route a channel in the back of the trim pieces where it overlaps the mirror, or else the outer edge of the trim won't lie flat against the wall. If you don't have the carpentry skills to DIY, ask your finish carpenter to do it - I'm sure it'll be a lot less than $200 per mirror (42" x ? each). Do you have pics of bathrooms so far (vanities, sinks, faucets, lighting installed?) so we can see what style is? Of course, oceanna's solution is much easier to DIY and looks so pretty (but more casual/contemporary). As always, oceanna, your painting is beautiful! I'd love to see your whole bathroom!

Sorry took so long to update....These are some photos of the bathroom, although it was still not completely finished at the time these were taken. The door and shelves have been stained a Carbon gray gel stain that almost perfectly matches the vanity. I used 8" white shiplap through out. The wall lights purchased through Lowe's online. The mirror purchased at Pier 1. The shower tile feature is carrera marble patterned, and a sea grey tile purchased at 'The Tile Shop' in Urbandale, Iowa. The laminate wood floors are from Home Depot in Mushroom? or the next grayer color. The vanity is 60" dark grey with carrera marble top, sink, and faucet included. I changed the knobs. I think I ordered from Houzz but can't remember. It's also on Wayfair. It all looks better in person than in the photos. I don't love that the toilet is right in the middle as you open the door but I didn't want the hassle of changing the layout/footprint of the bathroom. Overall I am happy with my choices. The mirror is a little fancy to me but my husband loved it and the design echos the patterned shower tile so I went with it.

What composite deck product should I use for bench top?

I want to build 12-foot long benches on two opposite edges of my deck. They will function as pseudo-guardrails, but guardrails are not required since it is a low deck. The bench seating should be around 12” deep. What kind of composite decking boards should I use for the bench tops? I am leaning toward 11-12” wide fascia boards, but some are not very thick. I had trex woodland brown fascia on the side of the deck of my last house in 2009. It warped badly. It was installed vertically over solid pressure treated wood fascia board. That deck was in the sun and got very hot in the summer. Also there were daily temperature fluctuations all year round. Where I live now, it gets very hot in summer and moderately cold in winter. It is much more humid and rainy. Daily temperature fluctuates less in summer and about the same in winter. My current deck is partially shaded. I can create whatever structure I need under the bench to support the composite bench top. Feel free to advise on the underlying structure. There was some talk on the internet about how the boards needed to breathe (or something). I can also use two 6” boards instead of one 12” board for each bench. The trex woodland brown color is perfect, but I may be able to go with a lighter gray-brown color. The yellow pine decking will probably be stained cabot pewter gray semi-transparent (IIRC), which is like a beige-y gray driftwood color but not gray. Do the composite boards need to be a certain thickness? Would pvc decking be a bad idea? There seem to be new technologies now. I have seen fascia boards less than 1/2” and others more than 0.6”. I have built a composite low deck before, but not a bench or railings.

Have you thought about trying to find a remnant? We are getting 3cm granite for two smallish vanities with sink cutouts for about $600 total because they are remnants.

We are using corian for our shower seat though. I ordered it from the same place where I got my custom corian shower pan but it was under $100 I believe for the 18" x 39" piece.

Hi Fausonk - just saw this thread because I am going through the same thing and hope you might check back, since it started back in February. I was just curious what you decided for your counter tops. We actually used a porcelain tile that closely resembles carrara marble, with real marble accents in the tub, shower and backsplashes. Now I am trying to decide how to proceed with the tops. I have been looking into white granites and some of the marbles. Carrara and statuary are difficult, because they can have too much veining. Since the floor is not marble, we want to make sure we choose something that compliments and does not try to match to well (because it probably never will). I was also curious what paint color you chose to go with the carrara. We will have white cabinets and need to go with something in the gray family. As far as your countertops, I have just gone through so many options and it seems that unless you choose formica, without all the fancy edges, most of the other solid surfaces, corian, granite, etc. are all around the same price. Have you found any other options? The remnant idea is great, but it won't work in our case because we have two countertops and a tub surround to cover...
