Bosch vs. GE Monogram single oven

Finally narrowed choice down to two: Bosch 800 single oven or GE Monogram ZET series single oven. GE is about $800 more & has 3 gliding racks instead of Bosch's one. I've tested Bosch's other racks in the store & they're smooth enough that I wouldn't pay an extra $800 for two more. Is there any other reason any of you can give to shell out the extra money for the GE Monogram? Bosch seems to check out well in reviews here & other places online. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

After having the ZET2 Monogram, I wouldn't pay $800 TOTAL for one. Lots of reasons I disliked that oven, and another forum member and avid baker has had identical problems. It wasn't either of our ovens, it was the Monogram engineering/design. I have outlined the problems in recent posts here, so don't want to repeat. I think I explained it as well as anywhere in this one:

As far as those racks go...They're wonderful and they're horrible. It's great they can stay in during self-clean, and they do glide out nicely. However, they are bulky and take a LOT of room, and the oven has only 5 rack positions because of it. Of the 5, the top one is too close to the top element and the bottom one is too close to the bottom element, leaving 3 rack positions. It is really not reasonably possible to use all 3 racks at once, so you'll be storing one.

Thanks for your feedback, rhome410. I'm sorry you had a negative experience. Opinions seem to be about 50/50 on the Monogram. Lots of Bosch varying feedback, too, unfortunately. For a $2000 budget, I haven't found any brand with rave reviews. Guess I just need to make a choice, buy the extended warranty & hope for the best!

I can second what Cookingpassion has said about the ZET oven. I've lived with the single wall oven (ZET1) for about a year now and am completely pleased with it. Very quick preheat, quiet fan, rolling racks, large oven cavity, easy-to-use controls, very even cooking/baking/browning of food, and easy to clean up. I've run the self-clean numerous times and it does a beautiful job. It is FAR superior to the Kitchenaid Architect wall oven in our previous home. My other top contenders were Thermador and Fisher-Paykel and I'd choose the Monogram again today. We have paired it with a Wolf AG range and the Monogram wins as our go-to everyday oven because of its fast preheat and self-cleaning function. However, you can't beat the gas oven for broiling, roasting, etc.

I throw in my 2 cents here as I have done my share of research. I should say that I am baffled as to why wall ovens are so fracking expensive. If someone can explain that to me I would be grateful. Right or wrong I ordered the single mid-line Bosch. Why? I liked the look & feel of it. None of the "American" brands have a look that I liked and didn't seem appreciably cheaper. FWIW, Bosch and Thermador are made in the same factory and have the same "guts". Thermador has a heavier look and is more automated in its feature set. I really don't care about having a separate convection element. Convection is all about even heat throughout the oven. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm sure the extra element is better but in real world usage I'm a bit skeptical that anyone could taste the difference. IMO, energy use should be a non-concern as what you're after is an excellent end result. I've never heard anyone say, gosh those snickerdoodles are awesome and only used .5 kilowatt hours!! Why someone would use convection when broiling a steak is beyond me. As much as possible I only want to heat one side of the meat at a time. I don't want the underside to be pre-cooked before turning. If I had it to do over again. I think I'd buy the bottom line Bosch, order the telescoping rack separately and save a couple hundred bucks. But that's just me.

Last year we built a new home and went with the Monogram. I wanted the handles, gas stove and the 240 Advantium. We are now currently building our 2nd new home, but I am preferring the Profile's handles this time.. and just don't feel the price difference is worth it, since I have been told that they really are identical, except for exterior features and price.

Disclosure: I am a grandmother, consumer, non-techie, and considering a move into the Consumer Advocate arena. The sections of this post include: - About Bosch Benchmark - GE Ovens - How Swing Effects Roasted/Baked Food - How to Estimate Your Oven’s Swing (aka variance or range) About Bosch Benchmark I am in the process of replacing my second Bosch Benchmark double wall oven. The top ovens had a swing of 93* and 73*, respectfully. The first oven performed beautifully for 6 months, the second for a few weeks. Faulty electronics were evident in my experience. Note: the first oven was version /01 (installed 12/15) the second version /04 (installed 2/2018). Bosch uses average temperature to determine if an oven operates within spec. Within 28 months, my ovens were operable for 9 months, inoperable for 19 months. **How many households with kids could keep their family on track with inoperable ovens?** Bosch, on their part, offered me a buyback this month. But it took a tremendous amount time and bird-dogging on my part. GE Ovens GE states on their website the acceptable swing is +/- 30* using a 350* temperature setting. Hence, your oven meets spec if it’s temperature ranges from 320* to 380* within a 20 minute cycle time. (Check out the GE Appliances site and search for ‘oven temperature variance.’) How Swing Effects Roasted/Baked Food Here are a few examples of how a high oven temperature swing effects food roasted/baked from tried-and-true recipes: - prime rib (shooting for MR) is well on the outside, bloody red around the bone - a tried and true family fruit cake recipe, baked for at least 70 years on all types of ovens, took much longer to bake, passed the tooth pick test, was sticky on the top center, and crumbled when sliced - a chicken and rice casserole never got done; I used the rice cooker to finish cooking the rice and the chicken was too tough to eat - two cake mix cakes, in which I adhered *exactly* to all directions, were baked using the shortest time indicated; they were full of tunnels, extremely dry, and tasteless How To Estimate Your Oven’s Swing 1. Position an oven thermometer in the center of the oven. (Cooks Illustrated recommends a CDN Oven Thermometer... of course Amazon has them.) - - - do not open the oven door until the test finishes - - - 2. Set your oven to 350*, and let it heat up for an hour. 3. Choose a start time. 4. Every 5 minutes (4 times in 20 minutes) note or take a pix of the oven thermometer. 5. The highest and lowest temperatures registered represent the oven swing. Note: technicians use a special tool to measure oven swing that is much more accurate. Phew! Time to return to my research!

You might check into Fisher & Paykel, making sure you have service available in your area. You ruled out Electrolux? Both of those have glide racks, and in my experience the F&P is superb for baking. But still, I'd take my chance on the Bosch before I'd spend for the Monogram. The answer to your original question is, after having one, I don't see a reason to shell out any extra to have it. It is attractive to look at...

By the way, mine worked correctly for how it was engineered to work -- It wasn't just a 'lemon'...But the limited rack positions, the inability to adjust the temperature in less than 25 degree increments, and, mostly it's inability to achieve and maintain the temp, with its engineered heat-recovery response to kick on the preheat mode so the result was burned baked goods, make it a lesser option than the Bosch, IMO. I think the difference in those who like it and those who hate it is how much they bake vs how much they roast meats, cook casseroles, heat frozen food, etc. The Monogram is OK for meats, etc., and probably even for the occasional cake or batch of cookies, just not for avid bakers who need accurate and even heat, and consistency.

Went back to appliance store #1 today & wound up getting a great offer on a floor model of the Wolf single wall oven. I read all of your Monogram posts & while I am not the baker you are, you bring up significant points & some of them may affect me as well. I hadn't considered the Wolf oven before b/c it was out of my price range, but the floor model sale made it comparable with the Monogram & Bosch 800, so I'm going for it (along with the Wolf 36" gas cooktop). Thanks again for your feedback. Your reviews are extremely detail oriented, and I very much appreciate the information.
