How to thank nursing home staff?

My husband died this week after two years in a nursing home. I'm not sure of the best way to thank the staff, in particular four nurses who gave me updates several times a day for the past few weeks. Individual notes? Individual gifts? One gift for all the staff on the unit? Any ideas?

Oh, Susan, I am so sorry to hear this news. I know it's been a long road for you. My greatest condolences.

As for the staff, I'd check with the administration at the nursing home. There may be rules about employees accepting gifts; I know there are rules against this at Mother's assisted living complex. A personal note would surely be appreciated, and a note to the office about the compassion and skill of these staff members will be nice, too, because it might go on their records as a recommendation when raise time comes around.

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband. I would suggest food as a good choice -- perhaps send a nice basket with chocolates, fruit, etc. And by all means, send personal notes. I finally sent a note to one aide who had taken wonderful care of my mother. I couldn't do it until nearly a year after Mom died, but I know she still worked there and I'm sure it was appreciated.

Last week I ran into the charge nurse on the 3-11 shift, in a Target store. She recognized me immediately -- I had to stop and think for a moment. She gave me a big hug and I told her that I think of everyone often, but simply can't come back to visit -- it's too painful for me. I also told her that I really appreciated what she did and that I know I didn't always agree with her, but I can see now that she is very good at what she does.

Not a frequent poster but I've certainly enjoyed following your home posts Bodica. You are in an intense phase of grief. "Did I inconvenience.." that is blaming the victim; don't do it. Remember that even though it was not installed, your mother knew that you were advocating for her right up to the end. Institutions can cause so much pain. I don't have experience with nursing homes yet, but the pain the hospital caused me and my daughter at her birth and in the following days took years for me to recover from. I wish I had spoken to a counselor or therapist bc it was very hard on my husband and I. What eventually healed me was the natural process of how dendrons/memories change in the brain (softens the memory; it's been documented), and also looking at how happy/free from hurt my daughter is now. Your mother is free from the pain now, I hope that is a comfort to you. Unfortunately many of us have gone through these nightmare experiences of intense pain; loss of loved ones, injustice. Some say call a lawyer, in certain cases I might, but also I just try to be more loving to the ones I've got left. That is what heals me and honors those who are gone. Best of luck, and fwiw, I'm sure this thread will help countless others. I'd never given a washlet a second thought before, but now it's high on my list for older loved ones and someday me.

As Jemdandy said, "State inspections do help, but one can not depend on these alone". I worked at a nursing home in California for eleven years, not in nursing, but in administration (payroll and billing). The state did not call ahead to let us know they were coming, but they came at about the same time every year (October for us). So, near the end of September a few things that they knew would be looked at would change. They would have inservices to remind everyone how to behave while the state was there. It made me sick and angry. The state only wants good care for the residents, and so should the nursing home, so they should behave in that manner ALL the time. It was a good nursing home - I mean I never saw or heard of any abuse, but it could have been better. As someone else mentioned, in California, the previous year's state inspection results must be not only displayed where others can see it, it must be "loose" so that they can pick it up and read through all it's pages. I know that it takes lots of time, but the only way to really know if a nursing home is doing its job is to speak with some of the families of the residents or maybe spend some time visiting someone there and watch the interaction between the staff and the residents. You would think that speaking with the residents might be the best, but unless you actually know that the resident is "together", that might not be the most helpful. My father, after he had had a couple of strokes, would tell us the most outlandish things that he swears happened to him and around him, and unless you knew him, you might have been convinced that these things really happened. I know for a fact that he didn't get mad at a nurse and push her through the sliding glass door in his room, because I would have been the one to call for repair, LOL. Good luck.

I go to a lot of nursing homes and my mom and uncle spent their last days in senior homes and hospice. The no window question....... if the patients do not have the extra money to pay for private room one person will be by the window and the other side of the room does not have a window. For privacy there is a drapery that they pull between the rooms. Also, Patients that have to watched 24/7 like patients with Alzheimer's Disease...Some facilities have them in like a circular interior room with the nurses station in the middle. Those patients do not have windows. The suggestion of talking to the homes is the best idea. I take plants to patients that enjoy having a little plant to care for but because I visit the homes and get to know the residents I know which ones are able to enjoy the plants and have the mind still to know the plants are not food. I take little succulents, and spider plants in small pots and I save little medicine bottles and put just a little water in them to water the plants. Because they are succulents and small plants I have instructions that these plants do not need water much only a drop. I pick up small containers at the Thrift store. I usually use pots that are made of resin, plastic, metal and they do not have drainage holes. I look for colorful containers or containers that are decorative. A sea shell, a little shoe, a bird, small plastic cups with bright colors etc.

Funny thread. I inherited my grandparents' burlwood Art Deco dressers about 20 years ago. Any clothing that sits in the drawers for months on end inevitably ends up smelling like my grandparents' house. The dressers are so gorgeous, and the smell so nostalgic, it never occurred to me to try to deodorize them. I keep an orange blossom/patchouli scented soap in my lingerie drawer as a sachet; I suppose one of my kids will eventually have that smell to deal with, too (unless they opt to sell the dressers).

Please accept my Sincere Sympathy. At such a difficult time how kind of you to think about the staff that cared for your husband. Individual notes are treasured. A fruit basket or home baked cookies is also appreciated to the home or wing where he was cared for. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

Certainly a gift to be shared amongst all the staff members is always appreciated.

If there were any nurses or staff members who were especially helpful or supportive for yourself or your husband, I think a small token of your appreciation and a note would be appropriate as well.
