Is rush seating difficult to learn?

I just posted this at the Kitchen Table, but perhaps one of you antique experts know the answer.

I have a set of low-back ladderback chairs that my DH and I bought 30 years ago, intending to fix up when the kids were old enough to stop rocking on their dining chairs. This took a little longer than we had anticipated (it didn't happen until they had grown and moved out). Now I'd like to use the chairs, but first they need new seats.

I've been trying to contact a woman in the area who does this sort of work. I have NO idea how much people charge to do this, do you? If I can't afford her rates, is this something I could do myself? I used to be fairly crafty, but mostly in fiber arts--sewing, embroidery, and traditional rug hooking. This isn't quite the same. Is it something I could learn from a book?

I prefer rush, but Shaker tapes are another possibility. They look a lot easier. Are they?

Thanks!

Susan
