Red Oak English Armoire

Hello,

I am new to this site and am looking for information on Armoires. The item I am referring to is a English Red Oak Armoire purchased in the early 1970s. It is in 3 pieces and it has a beveled mirror with plenty of storage. I am not sure the general value of it or if there is much interest for it. I have spoken to a few antique shops and haven't gotten very much help. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you!

Could we have a longer shot of the piece, including the feet? Also shots of the interior, sides, and back, if possible. Did it originally have a crown, or is that the original profile of the top? Also, what are the dimensions?

At first glance without these other photos, it looks to be from the 1910s or a few years later. It also appears to have its original finish in good condition.

Sadly, armoires are not really in vogue right now, although they are very useful pieces. The partial-width center door also limits its utility, as it makes it hard to access anything tucked behind the side panels.

Still, it's a graceful piece and would be good storage for linens, Christmas decorations, out-of-season clothes, craft materials, office supplies and records, etc.

Because there are a lot of armoires out there and not much market for them, the value is not terribly high ... at this time. They may come back into style in a few years. Its current value depends a lot on your area.

Does it have shelves inside, a hanging rod or a bunch of hooks? To me it looks more like a wardrobe than an armoire.

i love oaks for gardening under ... no experience with this one.. what is the potential width.. and how far from the house are you considering ... newer sealed sewer lines.. or septic field?? no tree should be that close to a field ... i would not feed the hosta ever again.. if you want the tree to ignore them.. if you fert the plants under the tree... you can figure out where it will grow roots ... i wonder what the understock is ... my oaks.. love my hot dry sand.. i do NOT know if they will appreciate.. as a babe ... the wet black loam ... 6 hours of sun is not bad.. but it isnt that great.. i do NOT know the shade tolerance of oak ... just listing variables that come to mind .. good luck ken

I planted a swamp white oak 18 months ago. Was just under 5' tall container, mail order from Forest Farm. I had read that swamp whites are slow growers, but mine has been very vigorous. I think buying small is a good strategy because the 10' B&B's at the garden centers will stare at your for a couple years before taking off and require a lot more watering. This guy will catch up with the bigger ones. I just watered mine weekly during the first summer, but did not water at all the second year. Generously mulched w/ leaf compost. Grew like crazy. I had to re-establish the central leader due to heavy deer browsing. After protecting, it easily put on 2-3 feet in height and a ton of density in the second summer. The trunk really bulked up quickly too. Looks like a winner. Fall color is better than expected, kind of a pale orange. In an area like NE Ohio, which is often pretty wet but also goes through some dry spells, swamp whites seem to thrive. Unlike a lot of oaks, they can supposedly handle wet or dry. Northern reds seem to prefer somewhat drier sites. Of course, Northern Reds are still very good trees. If you are dealing with wetness and/or clay soils, an alternative is the Nuttalli. They have the best form of the reds from what I have seen around here and are starting to gain traction. Guy Sternberg developed a nice cultivar (New Madrid) that you can buy mail-order. Just got one of those too.

You know that when they sand off those stain samples and then sand the rest of the floor that the "patina" on the old boards will also go. So it really doesn't matter much.

A couple thoughts: is the space where you've put all your sample swatches part of your floor? If so, you'll need to strip that wood again before you put your chosen stain and finish on. And some stains are really hard to remove. It would be better to have a "swatch" board that you can move around. stain soaks in to the wood. So how long you leave it before wiping off the excess affects the final colour. Do multiple applications to get a deeper colour. if you don't like the commercial stain colours, ask your floor refinisher to make you a custom mix. One way to do this is to give him a door or drawer from your cabinets and ask him to match it 2 shades darker (or whatever suits you).

In the US, "wardrobe" typically refers to the clothes you put in the armoire, not the piece of furniture! Although that has changed since I was a child, when wardrobe did mean a piece of furniture and I don't remember ever hearing the word "armoire." I'm curious -- in Australia, do you use the term "chifferobe"?

No, the only context in which I know "chiffarobe" is "To Kill A Mockingbird".
I would consider an armoire more of a cupboard with shelves.

Hmm, Colleen, a cupboard is always a piece of kitchen furniture or a kitchen cabinet to me! Where the cups and other dishes are kept, you know. We hang our clothes in a closet.

A chifferobe is half chiffonier (tall, slender chest of drawers), half wardrobe. It's an old-fashioned term and I don't know if these are even made nowadays.

In the US, an armoire can have either hanging space or shelves, or half and half. It's usually a bit grand and not confined to the bedroom. A smaller piece of the same kind would be called a ... uh ... I don't know! Don't really see them much!
