Octopus Themed Bathroom Remodel Reveal

Hi Guys,

My husband and I moved into a 1978 home with a 1978 bathroom in July and in August we started the demo of the worst room- the bathroom. I consulted these forums quite a bit for help and even though I don't post I'm really grateful for all of the tips/inspiration on this board and the others. That being said I thought it would be nice to post our completed bathroom here in case it inspires anyone else. It came out beautiful, to our taste. Although I'm sure it won't be everyone's cup o' tea.

I like the plum brown -- the purple only comes through where the sun is hitting it and it's almost an undertone elsewhere. I agree with filling the grooves and changing hardware -- try wood filler, but go gently. That stuff can be hard to sand down, especially if you have clumps of ridges. Work to have it go ion smooth. Fill and scrape off any excess before it dries so that you only have lighter sanding. Like spray paint, you would rather go with a few lighter coats than going to heavy. The panel might come off is nailed or screwed in place, but if it has glue, alone or with nails, it could tear up the wood. Just depends o what it is and how much is there holding how tightly. I'd try filling first. Another possibility is to try the paint first The dark color will make the grooves less obvious. And then there is the take the challenge and make it a feature approach. Look at painted furniture for ideas and make that panel a becomes a feature -- with a stencil, wallpaper, fabric (might be risky in a bathroom, but you could seal it.-- if it gets messed up, paint over it). Sounds like you are considering hte plum now -- tell DH it isn't purple -- more brown with an attitude or some character. Sounds better than raisin, doesn't it?

I realize this post is a bit old, but hopefully JSmith321 is still lurking about. Your bathroom is just beautiful, bling but not too much, just a unique, tastefully done job. I am in the process of planning to remodel our bath. We're definitely tearing out the tiles around the tub, ours are similar to your old ones, with the flowers (except ours are blue and white) I can't decide if we should tackle tearing up the floor, its in excellent shape, a powder blue with white grout. I was kind of thinking if we put some porcelain Carrera marble tiles surrounding the tub, with a border like yours, it might tie in with the blue floor and not look too bad. I am ok with the blue floor although I realize it is not a current trend, but I am very sick of trying to keep the white grout clean. (yes, I've sealed it but its 25+ years old and I can't get it as bright white as I'd like). I thought if I used a quality grout colorant, in a grey shade, that might tie it all together, the blue, white and gray. Anyone have any thoughts? This bathroom inspires me to work with the blue if I can.

Thanks, Donna and crl! writersblock - What's considered expensive? :D It was a little more than we expected since it was already plumbed, but we have a contractor we have used many times who is very detail-oriented so we knew those tiles would be perfect!

Mayflowers, yes, I think we're done....but also putting our closet together right now. I'll post pics when it's done. But then of course help with the bathroom backsplash. Thinking of a mini ledgestone. We don't need the basement done for a while, DS still likes to play basketball and Hot Wheels down there so no sense doing it. We are going to get the front yard redone this summer though. Overall it's been a busy 3.5 years. I feel like posting befores and afters of the whole house but my house is always a bit of a disaster LOL!

Really like what you and your Hubby accomplished! We have TWO 70's bathrooms to redo (with original blue and green fixtures). Can't believe you got it done so quickly!

I love this! Great job and very original, clever theme. I like the Boon Grass for holding toothbrushes and accessories - I might have to steal that idea!

I love this too! It's not often (ever?) that you use "whimsical" and "sexy" in the same sentence but that's what I'm going with for your room. There's alot to love about this room... the waterfall faucet, the dark tile with the perfect shade of orange, the custom artwork and octopus stencil, the rugs.... It's fabulous and I hope you and your family smile every time you walk in.
