A combination of Retin A and a fade cream will help but I think they need to be removed to actually go away.

That is sun damage from long ago. Yes, stay out of the sun, but a bleaching cream is an option. Personally, I had laser treatments at the dermo which definitely helped.

I found this site where this nurse takes before/afters of products she's tried. She swears by this pure-fused treatment for age spots, scars, wrinkles, etc. I hope this helps rnreviews.com

When I was taking birth control pills, I developed brown spots under my eyes. Stopped the pills and stayed out of the sun, the spots went away.

i had a consultation with a physician's assistant today. I was not interested in microdermabrasion or retinA as I tried retinA some years ago, and for the cost of the package, $500, I thought it was a bust..... it was difficiult to deal with the redness, etc.

She recommended laser for me, of the IPL type.
It's 5 sessions. one each month. it is good for european light northern skin, takes care of redness, etc. It's way way expensive though, almost $3,000.

I am hoping I can find it cheaper somewhere... What really irks me is that they insist on the 3 Grand up front! I see no reason for it, except that after 2 sessions maybe you would ditch them because your results were already good ?? Well that's still a scam. Any one have had the good fortune of getting IPL laser?

crispycritter - One thing you should consider is thickness of your skin. My skin is paper thin. I have perfect colouring - VPPP - for laser - but my skin is way too thin. I also think you should have a consultation with a plastic surgeon who does this procedure on a regular basis - in short - has his/her own machine - isn't a doctor who rents a machine once a month. My skin is very dry, dehydrated and I suffer from rosacea to top things off. After a 2 year thryoid imbalance at age 48 during which time my skin was completely covered with cystic acne, I was left with some scarring. I did consult with a top Toronto plastic surgeon who had removed moles for me (funny who you meet when going to a women's clinic - came in for consults - didn't usually remove moles, but heck I met him) - he told me that due to location of scars that they would become more pronounced if he did laser - but that my biggest problem would be recovery. My eyes had also suffered - very thin skin, deep set eyes - which due to thryoid problem had been swollen for the 2 years. Again, not an option due to thin skin. Funny though other doctors would do it. This fellow is highly reputable - costs him business but he can live with himself. I also cannot use any acids or fillers - what a surprise. Other than than my skin doesn't look so bad! Hydrating serum and rich moisturizers - plus sunscreen (often a problem despite my access to Canadian and European sunscreen - allergic to most). But cost is way to high for you to be diagnosed by an assistant.

thanks but I am finding out that most physician's assistants DO perform the procedure..it is the doctor as head honcho who oversees, trains, and recommends.

Interestingly, I just found another office that does not even recommend IPL laser on the basis that it gives inconsistent results! This doctor IS a plastic surgeon (the other place is run by a dermatologist) and this place recommends the Iridex laser. Yet another thing to research.

The point is, it's buyer beware of the methods, ask for alternate opinions. I think the physician's assistant's
are trained well by their doctors, but if the doctors have certain education, experience or bias, then they are going to pass that on to the people that they oversee.

Finance wise, I think it is unconscionable to ask people to pay $3,000 upfront for services before they are rendered. All other doctors, surgeries, and what not, are paid either at the time or immediately after.

Any dermatologist can freeze off your age spots and blotchy freckles. I have mine done once a year all over my body. Freezing is cheap and fast compared with lasers. Only one treatment is necessary. There's a few seconds burning pain...trivial for "beauty torture." The frozen spots scab over. It takes 6 days for the scabs to fall off the face and hands, 2 weeks for chest, arms and back, 3 weeks for upper legs and 4 weeks for lower legs. If you're in the sun a lot, more spots will return. I try to have my work done in the winter when the fresh areas won't be exposed to the sun until the skin fully heals.

Glad to hear it is livable.. do you go to work for those 5/6 days? That option was given to me but I didn't think I could make it work.. (AFter a bill of $3K, maybe I can)...

Were you allowed to put any makeup/coverup over the scabs for the duration?

also: forgot to ask: do the same old spots come back then? or are these new ones, you just routinely take care of on a yearly basis.

Whether I go to work depends on how many spots I have done on my face and where. If they're by my ears, I can wear my hair down and partially cover them. If they're small, dark freckles, they won't show too much compared with nickle-sized areas. They don't cover well with make-up during the first 4 days. I try to schedule it over a long weekend. The first day, they are red and blistered but not that horribly visible as they are later when they scab darkly.

If you reexpose yourself to sun, like I do, then more freckles and age spots will appear. Sometimes they're in the same areas, sometimes other areas. Sometimes an area will remain clear for 3 or 4 years and then I'll get another patch of blotchy freckles after a summer in the sun. The exact same spots do not reappear. I suspect that even if you never went out in the sun again, age spots would still appear from previous sun damage.

When the skin heals, it matches the old skin and looks completely natural. There's no worry about fat loss (some people have reported this with lasers) or too shiny or too pale skin. It sure beats a $3,000 bill.

This is an old post but I have to give a rave for a newer product called molepaste (#1 natural mole and wart remover) this stuff removed my friends skin tags, my mole, and brother in laws wart.. awesome product!

I had a skin tag that was right on my breast bone and I hated it. I did some online websleuthing and saw you could use Tinture of Iodine. It worked like a charm, it dried up the tag and I was able to remove it. Now I have to get rid of a few more on my neck.

Yes, getting older is great. You see all kinds of new things pop up (or down rather) everyday.

But the molepaste removes my agespots, moles, and warts. Excellent product.

re: the molepaste and removing age spots, how much of a scar does it leave ?

I can understand a mole drying up and falling, but the agespots are pigment discolorations, I'm concerned about the mark it would leave.

My scar is hardly noticable. If you put on camellia oil or some type of scar reducing cream, it softens it a lot and should scar too much (they say).

A pretty good product I have tried is Skin Brightening Cream by Barielle. It's one of the few that is Hydroquinone free. Other than that, sunscreen with at least a 30 SPF.

The molepaste has totally naturally cauterized them. It's a paste that you apply and it litterally wipes them out. It's not a chemical you put on your skin that makes it fade. www.molepaste.com
