Help with grout color...Please!

Hello,

I was told that I need to decide on grout color for our small master bathroom tonight. The bathroom will have 12x12 calacatta tiles on the floor with a dark espresso vanity with calacatta slab top. The shower to the right of the vanity will have white subway tiles on the walls, and white hex on the shower floor. I would like to use a light gray on the white hex shower floor, but lean towards white with the white subway tiles on the walls. Will this look okay or should I stick with the same color?

Also, we have a powder room where we are installing cararra hex. Is a light gray recommended for this?

Thanks for the help! I obviously haven't been focused on grout!

Believe it or not the light grey grout does not seem dark but rather defines the tiles, plus the white will tend to get dirty fast and seems to make the floor look too bland.
Personally I like the grout for the other tile to be similar incolor to the tile giving the floor more harmony instead of focusing on grout lines. Good luck.

Thanks! I came home to find the tiler left a package of grout sticks (the sample colors). I'm leaning towards platinum for the carrara in the powder room. There is a lot of variation in that floor, and the platinum seems to blend well with the light and dark.

I have one more day to figure out the master bath. I've laid out all of the tiles and have an idea. I need to wait until the morning when I have some light, though (we only have one light working in the room...need the electrician to come back out!). I'm thinking that brown tones would tie everything together in that bathroom, though. It looks like Oyster Gray would give the white hex definition on the shower floor, and then we could do a lighter grout on the shower wall subway (alabaster, linen?). The calacatta floors in outside the shower have a lot of white, so I'll have to wait and see what warm tone goes with that.

I'll keep working on this. If anyone sees any red flags or has any other suggestions I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi Bill, I have seen mention of this Mapei on other threads and did a google search and came up with a lot of foreign-language links. Who makes it? Or better yet, can you give me a link to a website? (Also, I sent you an email - did you get it? I noticed another tile installation disaster today. Our Master Bath floor has been covered for protection until today when part of it was exposed while the double vanity was installed. The large 16" square honed Calcutta Gold tiles are not centered on any of the walls, so there are really off grout lines at the center of the vanity. It is really obvious and when I think about it I literally want to cry :( . This is our forever house and everywhere I turn, a tile job is done badly. I could really use a good referal!)

If you use a color you'll be increasing the patterning. That is, you'll get a brickwork grid that pops, instead of a white wall with some texture. If you're trying to limit busyness this isn't going to do it. It puts a rectangular pattern against a swirly/spotty pattern. More of a more is more idea than a calming one. Whether it looks good or not is your choice. Some will like it. Some won't. But not timeless. Very of this moment. That's not a bad thing.

A couple things I’d like to add. I put epoxy grout in both my bathroom remodels. It can leave a ting of shadow in marble because it soaks in the sides of the tile. You don’t want that area to have sealer on it though so the grout can make connection with the tile. You can barely see the bleed, but it’s there. I personally love it because it adds even more depth to the marble. Here is my slate floor in a light medium gray epoxy grout. It looks almost white in contrast to the black. That’s the trick to the eye. This floor is worn hard. Farmer husbands bathroom with bad shoes. I don’t fuss with this floor except may be once or twice a year, lol. And it’s not hard. I do know that there has been some slight staining near the sink where DH stands to wash up. But it’s slight. The last time I mopped this floor was several months ago. I just sweep it. It could use another mopping I see. The right half never gets walked on, the left is the main walking path into the room. I can see a slight darling. This shower shown below, with porcelain tile, has a narrow grout line. It is a very light epoxy where I combined 2 colors to get a slight off white. No mildew or mold accumulates because it gets wiped down after the showers are done for the day by the last user. Usually it’s just me. I have not washed the walls except 2 times early on 5 years ago, because I thought I should. It is a waste of time because of the daily wipe down with a large microfiber towel. I do spend time with the shower door sweeps from time to time because they will get mildewy. The floor is a cast iron shower pan and I do clean that as typical for cast iron, but because I’m usually the only one using it, that’s not often.

A shower pan needs depth so that they can add a slant to allow water to drain. Only 'curbless' showers are level with bathroom floors. And those need +++++money/time/work to get done. A two inch step-up height for a shower pan is nothing in the scheme of things. So long as the slope and drainage are calculated properly, this should be no problem.

Being that you're using the calcutta marble for the floor, I'd go with a bone colored grout, and stick with it for everything-- including BOTH the hex (sanded) and the subway tile (unsanded). It'd tie everything together, and pick up the subtle tan tones from the calcutta marble.

I just caught some of the color names you mentioned, so I'm assuming you're looking at Custom Building Products' grouts. I also see you were thinking along the same lines as I was with the tan tones. I agree with the alabaster, but also check the antique white. Possibly even the butter cream or Italian straw.

Thanks for the suggestions. You are correct that the samples left are for Custom. I'll pull the the colors you suggested and look at them in the daylight.
