Having removed two porcelain tiles now, I can say that...

I have come up with a better way than the first tile.

First time, I cut canals with the grinder, then chipped it off carefully bit by bit with a chisel and hammer.

Second time, I cut canals with the grinder, then just hauled off and hit the tile itself with the hammer, right on the top. (Appropriate safety gear on all over). It cracked into lots of pieces, easy to pick up, no hitting myself with the hammer while aiming for the handle of the chisel, no odd angles to hold the chisel at...and immensely more gratifying.

It didn't affect any of the heating wires, at all, either.

So that's my hard-won advice. If you *have* to take tiles up, it's actually a lot of fun :)

Oh, and the ro sander worked fine taking down the thinset--actually better than a chisel--I could control how much the sander took off much better than with the chisel. Maybe I'm just more adroit with the sander since I'm more used to using it-I really couldn't control the chisel from dipping if I hit it at just slightly the wrong angle...More fieldnotes, fwtw.
