what product gives you the best suntan?

As an avid sun worshipper acquiring a good tan is pretty important to me. What do you use when sunbathing (outdoors) to get and keep that perfect tan? My best success comes from coconut oil which I make myself mixed in with cocoabutter. Any thoughts? Cheers. KL.

Baby oil, a unscented moisturizer, a splash of lemon juice.

This will get you a perfect sunkissed tan!

Skin cancer alert !!!!!!!!!! also wrinkle prevention, you won't be young forever, plan ahead................

I can tell you guys/gals are young; 20"s max, or I might be wrong.

You'll still get a nice light tan wearing sunblock; it will take longer but you will be protecting your skin. Roasting and toasting your skin with the above mentioned products gives you no protection from the harm that suntanning can cause.

I know I'm being a drag for mentioning this but I can't help it; the bad effects of the sun are cumulative, they will show up when you don't want it.

There are so many options nowadays for a tanned look without the damage.

ok, now you can tell me to mind my business or be mad at me, lol......

Definitely deep watering infrequently! The idea is that you want the water to soak in deep, forcing the roots to likewise have to go deep to get the water. If you water frequently and shallowly, the roots never have to go down deep to get water. For a lawn, set up little tuna cans around the lawn. Water until the tuna cans have filled up -- about one inch of water is what you want. Take a note as to how long it took the cans to fill up this long, and that is how long you need to water. Depending on your climate, you may be able to get away with watering only once a week. Try waiting four-to-five days. If the lawn still looks good, then you're fine. If it's seriously wilting, then you'll need to go twice a week. You really shouldn't have to water more than twice a week in nearly any climate. For established trees and shrubs, you shouldn't have to water more than once a week at most. I get away with once a month. Basically, use a soaker hose, and let it go for a number of hours. You want the water to go very deep.

Since compost is taken, another thing I have learned is to study your yard/area and observe the angles and placement of the sun during the four seasons. This is especially true when planning where to plant trees since they are more permanent. I don't like to plant any kind of evergreen tree on the South end of my lawn since it shades me out in the winter. A big shade tree on the West/Northwest corner of the yard keeps the house shaded in the heat of the day in the middle of the summer. While you're at it, why not plant something to shade your a.c. unit? Save even more energy.

Hi Jim: Getting to know neighbors is important. Few summers ago, our side of the street lost electricity for 4 hours, but people across the street still had their power on. So I went to my neighbor across the street to borrow her microwave to defrost a frozen dinner for my kid. Later on our refrigerator broke down, my husband fixed it ... but I had to put my food in the neighbor's refrigerators. One neighbor's washing machine broke down, and they had to travel far to get it washed. One product bad for roses: salt in chemical fertilizer, also salt in sewage sludge (milorganite), and salt in horse manure. Salt drives down potassium. However, salt is VERY USEFUL in lessening a cold. My kid caught a cold Feb. 6. Her cold lasted 1 day: she had fever & took a nap. I gave her Brewer's yeast & buckwheat honey & milk .. and her cold was gone the next day. My husband got it worse: 2 weeks of bloody nose, coughing .. he took daytime cold medicine (with caffeine), plus night-time cold medicine (Acetaminophen which suppress fever). What I learned from my microbiology professor: skip the cold medicine that suppress fever, since fever is nature's way of raising the temp. to kill the virus. She told the class to rinse their throat with very-salty-water at the 1st sign of a cold. Here's an article from New York Times: Gargle with salt water for colds "A sore, itchy throat and respiratory congestion are some of the more common symptoms of a cold, and gargling with salt water seems to help for several reasons. A saline solution can draw excess fluid from inflamed tissues in the throat, making them hurt less, said Dr. Philip T. Hagen, editor in chief of the “Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies,” which is due out in October. Dr. Hagen pointed out that gargling also loosens thick mucus, which can remove irritants like allergens, bacteria and fungi from the throat. In a randomized study published in The American Journal of Preventive Medicine in 2005, researchers recruited almost 400 healthy volunteers and followed them for 60 days during cold and flu season. Some of the subjects were told to gargle three times a day. At the end of the study period, the group that regularly gargled had a nearly 40 percent decrease in upper respiratory tract infections compared with the control group, and when they did get sick, “gargling tended to attenuate bronchial symptoms,” the researchers wrote. Other studies have also found gargling helpful against sore throats and congestion. According to the Mayo Clinic, for best results, dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a full glass of warm water and gargle the solution for a few seconds before spitting it out. Still energetic, but I immediately gargle with salty water. I ran a fever during the night, piled up blankets. I woke up at 7 am, gargle with salt, and I'm fine now as I drink brewer's yeast & buckwheat honey & milk. Buckwheat honey has been tested to be more effective than cough medicine. Brewer's yeast has been proven in studies to shorten the duration of cold, plus boosting immune system. This got to be the mildest one-night cold that I had ever experienced, the salt-gargle is VERY EFFECTIVE in stopping prolonged sore throat. WebMD on buckwheat honey What Brewer's yeast does is to help sleep easier, and deep sleep is the best way to boost immune system, unlike day-time cold medicine (with caffeine) which destroys sleep. Jess: Remember the puzzle over what cause our cravings for sweets ?? I still take Brewer's yeast (high in chromium, B vitamins, selenium) for my sweets-craving. I consumed Brewer's yeast for my immune when I was sick with flu-shot reaction, it took away my craving for sugar (despite drinking just lemons, no sugar). Now I cut down to 1/4 dose (only twice a week), just to supply chromium to stabilize my blood sugar. You are absolutely right. It's important to protect your skin from the sun. If you want a tan, go with a self tanner or spray on tan. When you are out in the sun, use a broad spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin. Here's a site with more information on the importance of sunscreen.

Take a well meaning tip from someone who has had several basal cell cancer's removed. I am very fair, red-blond hair and burned as a child growing up in the 1950's on a farm. The last cancer was on the tip of my nose and when removed left a nickel sized hole that needed 14 stitches, three inside and 11 from the nose tip to the bridge. (That was the only time I was glad my nose was on the larger size! He didn't need to do a skin graft from behind the ear.) I thank my Dr. every day that I look in the mirror because his skill left me with no scar. But I now get a full skin check once a year. All that childhood burning with no protection will be haunting me the rest of my life. Getting tan is just not worth it.

St Tropez is a very good sun-less tanner. I can add my own skin cancer stories. I've had two melanoma's and also have scars all over from having additional "suspicious" moles removed. I was also an avid sun worshipper. Olive skin and dark hair and eyes, so forget what you hear about blonds and redheads being the only ones would need to worry about skin cancer. Would I have never sunbathed if I had been told of these dangers when I was young? Truthfully, I would still have desired that golden tan but I like to think that I would have used a good sunscreen and just built up a lighter tan gradually.
IT IS NOT WORTH WONDERING EVERYTIME THAT YOU GO TO HAVE A MOLE REMOVED IF THIS ONE IS GOING TO BE CANCEROUS!!!

I know this isn't what you want to read but please think about it.

Just a couple other thougths here...

but are tans even "in" right now? I mean everyone wants a healhty glow to them, but I'm just not seeing a lot of deep dark tans. I thought that look was sort of out.

And, really, this is true...the people that always had that dark tan look when younger look at least 10 years older than everyone else now. I can't believe the wrinkles on their faces...they could compete with my mom. I can't be the only one that notices the premature wrinkles. It's really sort of scary.

Tanning now will not only make you look prematurely old when you are in your 40s, but as others have said, it is NOT worth the risk of skin cancer. With the hole in the ozone layer, the risk is even higher now than in the "olden days" when I was young.

Well-meaning friends are always lecturing me because I have a glowing tan all year long- but the truth is, I never go out in the sun without total protection. I use L'Oreal's bronzer and it looks very natural, so I always have a tan, but skip the dangers of real sunning. This time of year it goes on sale, so I stock up for the winter months.
