do you like your icemaker in your subzero freezer?

Hello Gardenweb,

I need your help to make a decision on a freezer. For design reasons we have to buy an undercounter model. We are considering the subzero as it has an icemaker, but I would like to hear some feedback.

Do you have a subzero freezer with an ice maker, and do you like it? How is the noise/taste of the icecubes? Does it break down?

We could always go for something else a little cheaper such as a Perlick, if the subzero ice maker is not that great....

Also, if you own an undercounter freezer that is not Subzero, would love to hear your feedback.

The ice makers in the Subzeros that I've owned have been trouble free and reliable. I'm not wild about the crescent-shaped cubes, but that's what the ice maker churns out with great reliability, and in profusion. The ice maker cycles fairly quickly too, so even when I remove a lot of ice at one time, the bin refills in a reasonably short while.

Odors or off-tastes have never been a problem. Subzeros have separate compressors for the freezer and refrigerator compartments, so there's no transfer of air, odors or flavors between the refrigerator and the freezer compartments.

We have a side-by-side SubZero going on 15 years old. The icemaker is probably the only component that has performed perfectly. Lots of output, no taste problems. Of course, virtually every other component has failed at least once, some more than once. The good warranty helped in the beginning, but overall it seems that we've ended up paying for the darned thing twice!

Anyway, A+ for the icemaker; F for the whole unit. They aren't making them like they used to when their reputation was tops for performance and reliability. But not to be entirely negative, it still looks great for a 15 yo.

We had the freezer drawers in a house we sold last year and had no complaints about them. We also had the 36" all refridge and loved it and miss it. Are you an ice family? Do you use ice for drinks/water often? Have you been through a summer without an ice maker? I would get it just to have it available in the kitchen. We left a small scoop in the ice bin and let everyone help themselves. It worked well. We are a family of 5 also. My wife didn't think we needed the drawers at all but was glad I convinced her once the kitchen was done (she told me to add this, smile). We had the freezer in another room too. I agree with previous poster about the warming drawers as I am not a fan of them. We used our oven to hold food when needed. Good luck. It sounds like you are going to have a great kitchen. DJ

I love my Jenn-Air bottom freezer, CD FD fridge. The freezer temp is always zero and the fridge is always 37 (unless DH leaves the door open:(. There is a digital readout and I can adjust the temp if I want to. Produce stays fresh for about 10 times longer than in my old Whirlpool SxS and the produce drawers don't freeze. One is fruit, the other is veg and apparently they are different temps (but who knows?) The deli drawer, below the produce drawers, has been known to freeze anything at the way back of the drawer, so I know it is colder back there. Then I found you can adjust the temp in that drawer from coldest (where it was) to less cold. Haven't had that problem since I moved the little thingie away from "coldest." I love this refrigerator. The KA is almost identical: they are both made by Amana.

Oops! I seem to have forgotten that I started this thread, but the responses have been very helpful. I think I will definitely to go El Camaguey and buy a tortilla press, although I don't think it has a stainless steel surface like Ann's, which would be nice. I do keep dry masa on hand, but I also keep fresh masa in the freezer - for making what I thought were empanadas, but which are probably quesadillas, at least as they are made in Mexico, and deep fried. As for flour tortillas, since I've found the whole grain tortillas in the market, I probably won't be making too many of those again, although I might want to experiment with some of the whole grain flours I have. I don't especially like tortillas made with all white flour, and corn tortillas are my favorite. When I first visited Vancouver for a long visit (1978 or so), I was shocked that I could not find fresh corn tortillas in the grocery stores (I did find frozen ones, but did not consider that acceptable). At that time, I practically lived on soft tacos (that I made myself, often with tofu), and so I had to make an adjustment. I think I bought some whole wheat crackers instead. I think I will try to find some Hispanic markets, although there aren't any in my immediate neighborhood. There are some in neighboring Mar Vista (where Scott lives), which is less than 2 miles from here. There are several places to buy fresh tamales, but they don't sell tortillas. Anyway, I think I will keep looking and also get the tortilla press. Lars

We have the 42SID/S and have constant problems with the ice maker. Due to the poor design the bucket pushes the arm up into the locked position when being put back in and it is not possible to see whether the arm is up or down. The instructions say, make sure the arm is down, but how can you tell? The solid white bucket blocks visibility to the arm. I would not recommend. We also had an issue with our Wolf speed oven/microwave during installation (bad circuit card that took 4 months to replace). The Sub Zero Wolf products look good and for the most part deliver, but hate to say that I would try a different brand in the future. We purchased during the home remodeling boom post Covid so there were likely a lot of quality control issues/supply chain challenges that may have been improved since then.

Have the new BI-48S and the ice maker is great. I like the cresent shape it goes into the glass and the cresent float to the top and nicely cover the top and fit lovely in a glass. The new ones and a max setting that produces about 20-30% more cubes than normal. I just turn on the unit and when full I shut the unit off till I get very low in cubes and by the next day it is full again. The new ones have a water filter than filters the water and the cubes taste great. We have had the unit for 3 months and the thing is huge and very flexible on what you can store. The door shelves holds a ton of stuff.

Thanks for your feedback everyone! Sounds like the icemaker works well.

The subzero freezer drawers are going to set me back ($5200 canadian!!!), but I think it will be worth it as other options such as perlick, and fisher paykel are not much savings and no icemaker.

Summit makes one with an icemaker, which would likely save us a bit, but like the fp it is 33" wide, which does not work that well with our space.

The appliances dealer we work with sells an extended warranty which will give us 7 years coverage. We should probably add that on, so that should help with reliability issues.

The icemaker on our 680 works fine. A nice thing about the SZ system is that you can open the fridge side door, hold an ice bucket or other large container (like a Nalgene) under the ice opening, and press a button for 'bulk ice'.

The one concern is that the ice 'drops' into the glass a bit hard. So if you have fragile glassware, you will not want to use them with it.

I should comment on the water part. The SZ has a built in water reservoir so that the dispensed water is actually cold. Some fridges, like our GE Profile garage fridge, do not have this. So the water is whatever temperature comes out of the pipe.
