Subzero Freezer Drawers with Icemaker

Does anyone have these? We will have a 36 inch fridge only, two dishwashers, a 48" range (or slide in cooktop with double ovens), a warming drawer, microwave drawer, and freezer drawers. I would prefer not to get an icemaker (we will have one in the bar in the den), but we do want ice in the kitchen. We will have a full size freezer only built into our laundry room where we will keep most things (meats, pizzas, frozen dinners, etc.). The kitchen ones are just for the basics (frozen fruit for smoothies, waffles, maybe some ice cream, etc.)

We are a family of 5 including 3 rapidly growing, constantly eating boys (hence the need for the 36 inch fridge!)

We are on appliance overload in our kitchen and I would love to eliminate one. I will panel all appliances, so I am less concerned about the look rather than the elimination of all the lower cabinet space.

If you have one - do you like it? Is it loud? Do you have the icemaker in it? Would you repurchase?

should be perfect for your application.

no louder than any of the other fridges you're getting and it's more quiet than the ice machine in the bar!

only thing you might do to free up space would be to ditch the warming drw. and or combine the microwave into a speed oven in a tower with another full featured single oven. If you're real clever and tall or don't mind stooping - you might be able to shoehorn in the warming drw. into this tower.

Sounds great! I'd do without the icemaker, but that's just me. My reasons for not wanting one are not wanting to worry about leaks, often cheaper and I just don't usually like the taste of the ice it can often seem stale.

I go the very low tech route of a stack of trays in the freezer. Once a month (or more often in summer) or if we're having a party we'll buy a bag of ice from the store and put in the freezer. I can honestly say I've never missed an icemaker.

What did you hear negative about them? I've had one for going going on 8 years and they're great. They created the market for drawer ref., only real drawback is they only come 27" wide. They are still the only ones to allow full integration. Everyone else's can't accomodate cabinetry toekick in front or it (the entire run) has to bumped foward.

"I can't imagine that is the problem considering the flakes/dirt are on the outside " why not? if the particulate can float it would rise to the top of the cube mold before it froze. Have you pulled the drawer & ice bin to inspect the maker itself for foreign matter? I'd probably disconnect the water line and flush it well. Keep some of the water to see what's in it, if anything?.

Ice-makers are spotty performers in Sub-Zeros....and in EVERY other ref in which they are provided. It's more-or-less the nature of the beast. They're light-bulbs....they work until they don't, and then we replace them. Replacement typically between 150-250 depending on what you have. For the common brands, appliance parts stores ALWAYS have them in stock. Big sellers and decent margins. Don't know specifically about Sub-Zero, but I doubt they make their own.

We had the freezer drawers in a house we sold last year and had no complaints about them. We also had the 36" all refridge and loved it and miss it. Are you an ice family? Do you use ice for drinks/water often? Have you been through a summer without an ice maker? I would get it just to have it available in the kitchen. We left a small scoop in the ice bin and let everyone help themselves. It worked well. We are a family of 5 also. My wife didn't think we needed the drawers at all but was glad I convinced her once the kitchen was done (she told me to add this, smile). We had the freezer in another room too. I agree with previous poster about the warming drawers as I am not a fan of them. We used our oven to hold food when needed. Good luck. It sounds like you are going to have a great kitchen.
