Shame on you. I can't believe you are blaming this sound on the Capital burners instead of admitting to your wife that it came from you. You could at least blame it on the dog. :-)

Seriously, my Capital burners do that somewhat but I don't think it's loud enough to startle anyone. I suspect it's a mixture of air and the last bit of gas igniting inside the burner. Take off the burner and the gas attachment below and re-seat them and see if it goes away.

Or get a dog...

I got something like that occasionally, but it seemed to be associated with too-sudden turns of the knob, such as going straight from simmer to off in one quick motion. Once I figured that out it made sense. The extra gas "in the chamber" has to go somewhere. Now I just make it a smoother turn to the off position.

It also does something similar in the opposite direction if I bypass the "Light" stop and go straight to simmer from off. Again, that makes sense too. So now, i make it a point to stop at "Light" (anywhere on or before "Hi") until it lights and then adjust the flame to where I need it.

thanks. It didn't seem to be any sort of fault but I thought i would check. If you weren't expecting it, you feel like your about to be consumed by a fireball.

It happens more often when we use the burners for actual cooking (not turning on and off). We're on propane, i wonder if it has something to do with the gas getting cold then expending once the heat goes down. Or the way it sits in the line going to the burner post on/off valve. High powered burners need a big line.

Do Blue Stars do this?

Do you have Natural Gas or LP? I have LP and i get that "pop"/"puff" as the flame goes out. I was told that this would happen with the LP stove because of using propane rather than atural gas. Not sure why

I asked the querstion from Tony of Capital this afternoon, answer below.

This phenomenon occurs mostly with LP gas and even has an industry name of
"extension pop".

This pop is caused by the nature of the LP gas (but occasionally with
natural gas) which burns hotter than natural gas and runs at a higher
pressure. When the flame is on LP gas is being pushed into the burner at a
certain pressure and when it is turned off the pressure inside the burner is
immediately reduced to that of the surrounding atmosphere. Because of the
high heat of propane it ignites most of the gas inside the burner at once
and causes a popping sound. The hotter the burner and the bigger the burner
the louder the pop.

I have the same issue as you, although I suspect my "pops" aren't as loud as yours as mine is not like a car backfiring. More like a loud "whoosh." I also wondered if others experienced the same thing. I've never owned a gas cooker so didn't know if this happened with all gas units or just the CC.

I have a 6 burner rangetop with NG. Still love it, but will try to turn it off slower than my usual Tasmanian devil speed to see if that makes a difference.

Happens to me sometimes (on a 30" Culinarian), especially on the front left burner. Using natural gas.

From page 14 of the manual (yea I know guys don't ever read the manual).
"NOTE. If you are using propane gas, a slight pop flash may occur at the burner ports a few seconds
after the burner has been turned "off". This "extinction pop" is normal for propane gas."
We have LP too, never questioned the pop.

Now I wonder if turning it off in a smooth motion and not getting a pop is just a coincidence. I couldn't make my range pop last night. But since it's a non-issue, I'm not going to give it another thought. :)

I thought it was probably the LP expansion. It didn't seem like it was the range top, since all you can do it turn it on or off, which is why i wanted to see if anyone else knew what i as talking about.

The style of the CC burner that holds a lot of gas inside the "donut" probably has something to do with it. I wonder if BS burners do that? My guess is it's less of a problem because the star pattern doesn't hold much gas inside the burner.

I had a bottom of the line Hotpoint on propane. It also turned off with a "pluff." I always assumed it was propane (now I know!) although I was looking hard for excuses to get rid of it.

I have the same problem on some, but not all, of the burners on my BS. I have natural gas.

Hasn't bothered me enough to call a service person, even though range is still under warranty.

Sometimes get this on one of the 22K burners on the Blue Star. Natural Gas. But the thing about turning it off slowly was starting to dawn on me and this thread is really helpful as a confirmation. I had been wondering if I was supposed to do a shutter adjustment or some other kind of adjustment. I think being careful to turn off slowly is the remedy.

Well, wouldn't you know it, I got the pop this morning. I was making some stock for the week and had the pot boiling on a front burner while skimming the "chum." When I was done skimming, I moved the pot to a back burner to simmer and when I turned of the front burner, puff. From that point on it would puff whether simmer or high, slow or fast. As Trevor posted above, it had more to do with a hot burner and the extra gas. I guess I had always seen it before, but never thought much about it until this thread. One thing to take away from this is that when you do see the puff, there's no question that the burner is off.
