How to fix Capital Culinarian burner "starters"?
Comments (12)First of many caveats- I don't own a Culinarian. So, what I'm going to relate is based on the Bluestar. Second- if you're going to work on or test your stove, unplug the damn thing first. Bluestar's service manual has a list of things to check when having igniter issues: 1) Power- if some work then you obviously have power 2) Broken igniter- if moving the burners that don't work (with igniters) to working positions is successful, then this isn't the case (also if moving previously working burners to bad positions doesn't get the position to work). 3) Pinched wire- you hadn't mentioned whether you looked for this; basically a wire grounding somewhere other than the igniter 4) Valve switch- it isn't clear from your earlier description, but what you want to check is for continuity across the switch. With the power off, check the resistance across the switch in normal and switched positions. In the normal position, resistance ought to be infinite (off), and in the switched position, it ought to be near zero (on). 5) Bad spark module- if you've eliminated the others successfully (including #6), then that's what you're left with. I have no idea whether your Culinarian has a single or multiple modules. My Bluestar had two modules that I replaced with a single one after one failed. Hopefully, Capital will provide it, because it can be a bit tricky to track one down otherwise. I ended up getting an updated one (thus, going from two modules to one) from a dealer that sells Viking parts (they all use the same Invensys or other components). 6) Too big a gap- this ought to be #2, but Bluestar put it last. Make sure the igniter-to-burner gap isn't too big to make a spark. I think you eliminated this possibility by moving the burners to other positions and having them work. I'd focus on #3, #4, and #5. Also, if you do take off the front to look at the module, make sure that the wire connections there are solid. Good luck....See MoreCulinarian simmer service call
Comments (79)Hi everyone. I'm sorry for not responding sooner I just came back from running some errands. My DH (I think this means dear husband) said his was purchased in a specialty store that services cameras. He is going to find the name and the link. Please understand that I am still having an issue with the simmer for stews, sauces and the like. I just wanted to post some good news that the cast iron griddles no longer smoked when I heated them up on simmer. However in a misguided attempt to pan sear on medium some salmon fillets before I put them in the oven I created a nice Jackson Pollock oil splatter all over my beautiful statuario backsplash. I must confess I was warned about the marble and went in with my eyes wide open. The culinarian on the other hand..... I would like to sign off LOL which for the longest time I thought meant Lots of Love. But the real LOL is what keeps me centered. And several glasses of wine....See MoreCulinarian 8K Simmer Burner Retrofit
Comments (71)Capital's got this fix coming!!! I am a newbie to GW and this is my first post. I am building a new house and was looking to put in a high end rangetop in the kitchen. I came across the CC while searching but had no idea about the brand. So I searched the GW for info on the Culinarian. Thanks for all the info and feedback from everyone, they were very helpful. However, I was concerned about the lack of a true simmer burner (contrary to what Capital's marketing says) as noted in various threads here. So I called Eurostove today to find out if this is a real problem and if Capital has fixed it by now. Trevor Lawson informed me that it is a known problem. However, he said Capital is working on a real simmer burner for the Culi, an 8K or 9K burner, that just contains the inner burner holes. This would be offered as a retrofit kit to current owners. Expected availability is 4-6 weeks from today, so that puts it around end of July 2012. Perhaps Capital's engineers saw Billy's fix and thought we can do it too. The simmer issue was one thing that bugged me about going with the CC, but now that is being fixed, I think I will buy the 48" CC with the BBQ when the simmer is incorporated into the design....See MoreBluestar, Capital Culinarian, American Range Simmer Question
Comments (10)Some commercial ranges have a French top, or griddle type of plate if they make a lot of sauces. Otherwise they just put the pan off to the side of the burner. The newest Culinarians have one specific simmer burner for small plates. The larger burners are of course adjustable down to a simmer, but not as low as the special simmer burner. Blluestar is much the same, although they also have a mid-sized burner as well. American also has various sized burners. And as mentioned, the simmer (or the low) can be adjusted somewhat on all the burners. A tip to cdycdm who posted above. You can set the low simmer (turning the knob to the left) just as low as turning the knob towards off. You would need to slide the knobs off and use a small screwdriver and set the flames lower. You can do a search here to find out how or call Bluestar. Here's a video to help you adjust your low setting- it's for a different brand, but the idea is the same Here is a link that might be useful: adjusting a simmer flame...See Morebreezygirl
