I have an old antique Tallboy Tiger Oak dresser, probably from the 1910-1920 era. It has been totally dissasembled and re-glued, repaired and restored. Thanks for all the great imput, gals. I'm going to test drive the room tomorrow using my older recliner from the living room. It's bigger than the new one I'm considering, but by setting it up with the oak washstand I'll have a better idea of the space I have to work with. I often sleep in Wes' recliner, especially when the ole bronchitis is acting up. I think it will suit my reading/relaxing/listening-to-audio-books/napping purposes. I just hope there will be room for two chairs. For some reason I want "seating for two" in this room. Of course, there will be an office chair pulled up to the computer where I tend to spend a wee bit of time! LOL Here's the wash stand I plan to use as an end table. The drawers can hold office/computer supplies. Since taking this photo (at the old base house) I've put vintage handles on it. The lamp and lace will have to go into the sewing room; they don't "fit" the office. Here's the new/old drawer pulls.

Hats! Makes so much sense. Odd that my post and the one asking about the full gentleman’s dresser should be on this forum at the same time. I searched gentleman's dressers and found a number of them, which confirms this in my mind. It explains the asymmetry of the top scroll design, and the fact that it has a new floor which you can see inside the door section. As removed from the original piece, it would have been bottomless. Any guess as to age?

I'd love to see a picture....I suspect it's an Empire style dresser from about 1830 to 1850... The chest that I have that my great great grandfather made has a similar problem....and sometime someons put brass headed thumb tacks on the drawer sides where it slid on the body of the chest. Also, mine is so worn sown on the slider part that the 1/16 inch of the thumb tack helps it fit. Closed there is a 1/3 inch gap at the top of the drawer. Also, the thing in the center of the drawer that is supposed to glide between to pieces of wood on the chest itself....perhaps they are out of alignment. And the old solution was either parrafin, candlewax or soap. As how to combat the jumble....hmmm...mine now holds family pictures, but growing up it was the hat, scarf, mittens and a shawl to wrap up in while watching TV.... But how about purses/ Sweat shirts....or even extra linens....and use your linen closet for folded sweaters.
