I sold an antique English armoire summer before last on Craigslist. I had many interested parties and two people actually were in a bidding war. It depends on where you live, but if you're near a large metro area, CL can be a great source. Key is to take quality photos, don't reduce size too much, show detail clearly and make sure they are right side up - you'd be surprised how many people post photos sideways or so blurry you can't tell what you're looking at! Get other objects out of view so the only object in the frame is what you are selling. I also had a link in the ad to a Picasa album with more photos that were larger size. You can also do ebay with local pick up only but IMO, ebay has become more trouble than it's worth. Good photos are your best sales tool. Give dimensions in the ad so you aren't fielding calls from people who won't have room for it. Good luck.

Might want to move it before you decide you must sell it--you might find that storage very useful in a smaller home, assuming your ceilings can accommodate it!

I share the same CL as dlm2000 and agree wholeheartedly about the pics! It drives me crazy when there are either no pics or one taken from a cell phone that's completely blue/gray, fuzzy and I have to press my nose to the monitor to see it. ;) And my most frequent email request is "what are the dimensions, please?" Ack!

I always watch for French or English armoirs. They are stunning! dlm, I was out of town a lot over past two summers, probably missed yours. Bummer :/

It's pretty, but to be honest, I wouldn't buy it with all the interior modifications. Can they come out?
I'd also use something on the dings and chips that show clearly at the bottom of the piece.

Here in LA, large pieces of furniture go pretty cheaply on CL. I'd guess you could get maybe $300 for it.

Craigslist or other local classified will get you more money, but will take your time to list and show it, you have to store it until it sells, and you have to deal with transaction details (risk of counterfeit cash or bad cheques). Fastest bet is a used furniture store, consignment or otherwise but you'll get less as the store has to make money too. I doubt any real antique dealer would take it with the modifications.

It doesn't look like anything really special to me as antique wardrobes go, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to be able to say whether its value might be enhanced above the obvious by what seem to be hand-hewn panels. Maybe it's really really old? Perhaps you know something about it from when you bought it and can price it accordingly.

If on craigslist, I'd show the interior modifications but offer it with or without; that might increase the number of potential buyers. But I'd want to be pretty confident about the electrical work if I was selling it with; if a fire ever results, I'd imagine liability could find its way to you.

our local antique mall will take things like this on consignment. But I have to say I agree with the others, I would not buy it with the modifications, I would probably buy it without, depending on how much it was. And I probably would not pay high dollar for it, but the outside of it is nice. If you cant or wont take the insides out, can you at least paint it to blend more?

I can't believ I am looking at the same piece of furniture when I see the hand hewn inside of the doors and the outside....and I am wondering what light wood it is that the nicks and dings show up white?
It almost looks to me like the doors are something totally different.
Whatever it is....or was...it's been seriously clobbered....even ruined I might say. Most of the value it once had is gone.

just bought an antique wardrobe.love it ours had 3 big mirrors,all we looked at and we saw alot of them all were 1200,1500 on up.you couldnt get one here for 300.

I'm not sure what you mean by "restored", and I doubt that what you mean by "restored" would be what antique lovers would expect when they heard that term. The outside of the armoire is quited chipped and dinged, especially towards the bottom, and the interior has been gutted and replaced with what looks lilke melamine shelving. "Modified" would be a better word than "restored".
Be sure any advertisement include a photo of the interior because a lot of people would be quite diappointed if they came around to look at the armoire with a view to purchase, if they had only seen an exterior photo.

Some people will see that interior as a positive. And why not; modern houses with closets don't need such clunky furniture unless it has a modern function. And I can say that because I have no closets and do have such furniture, and trust me, at easily 20" deep, even if it's beautiful and historic, it's clunky :-)

Someone might find a way to paint that melamine and touch up the finish on the wood, and the whole thing would look hunky dory to some people.

Guess we lost the OP though - too bad.

I'd list it as "antique armoire retrofitted as media cabinet". It sure beats most TV cabinets!
