Choosing Range hood, please help!

After reading the previous posts and my own need, I am narrowing down to 2 choices: Proline PFLW 115.30 and Cavaliere AP238-PS13. they seem to be the exact hood (even the manuals are 99% identical) except Proline give you a stronger halogen bulb with extra year (total 2) warranty and the Cavaliere stated theirs have a 30 hour cleaning reminder which I don't really care one or the other. Neither disclosed where they were made.

However, the stainless steel material got me confuse - Proline''s weighted 68 lbs use 430 stainless with no disclosure of the gauge; Cavaliere said theirs are 304 with 19 gauge SS, no wt info provided. Price are very compatible. Which one is better?

Any comment, suggestion is appreciated. Thanks.

General comments are possible but the "better" question cannot be answered with just the information provided.

With the caveat that metallurgy isn't my field:

300 series corrosion resistant steels (CRES) include nickel and chromium with the iron and are non-magnetic. They may take a better surface finish as seen on stainless flatware.

400 series CRES do not have nickel. They are more corrosion resistant under some conditions, not normally applicable to a kitchen hood. They may allow better (less brittle) welds. They are magnetic.

Color may differ due to the nickel, which by itself is yellower than chromium due to lower reflectivity in the blue end of the spectrum.

My Wolf branded, made by Independent, Pro Island hood is non magnetic and presumably a 300 series stainless steel. Welds look good to me, but the cost was high enough to pay for quality work.

I have a decades old magnetic Revere Ware pan that works on my induction cooktop. It is presumably made with a 400 series steel. The steel is less shiny inside than similarly old Farber Ware pans that are non-magnetic, presumably 300 series stainless, and not usable with induction.

(Note that stainless steels are not truly stainless, just stain resistant. I had to use phosphoric acid to clean the hood extension of factory supplied fingerprints. Brushed stainless is harder to clean with polishes than smooth stainless.)

My comment is about the company. I had a VERY disappointing experience with ProLine. The model that I originally ordered never arrived. I had to settle for a different one to be able to finish the kitchen. The model that I received did not have one of the advertised features (dimmable lights) or it simply doesn't work. There is no documentation to support their '2 year warranty' claim

Broan E64E30SS with Broan's 600 CFM or higher remote or in-line blower will do the trick. These utilize 10 inch round ductwork. Remote blowers install on the outside of your house, either on the roof or an exterior wall. The In-line blower would be intalled in an attic if you have the room. These tend to be slightly quieter than the remote blowers. The higher the CFM output a blower has, the quieter its operation on low setting, the most common setting. also look at Vent-A-Hood 30 inch 600 CFM units. These are a bit quieter for normal and high settings than the Broan but work best when the output from the hood is vertical, not horizontal. Also, if these appeal to you, have a saleperson show you how to dismantle to clean. It's not hard but it's also not for everyone

First of all--please yourself! I think I hear an undercurrent of "I like this but I don't think it'll work so I like that". Your big issue is that you're going for a stark palette but still want lovely rather than, um, stark. If you do a stainless hood with stainless counters and stainless range and white tiles to the ceiling it might get to be a bit off balance. The first of your inspiration photos has dark down, light up, and a line of medium (the counters and cooktop) in the middle. The white hood on white wall works. The square shape in the third picture is nice. See Gizmonike's hoods. But it does look a little stuck on wall--this is counteracted wtih the molding at the bottom, the busy backsplash, and the colorful clutter. On the other hand, with your 8' ceilings it will have different proportions. The math: 36" high counters + 30" clearance = 66" which means you have approximately 30" left for the height of the hood, or two and a half feet. A boxy hood of 48" x 30" (4' x 2.5'), or more likely 54" x 30" (4.5' x 2.5'), is going to have a different visual impact than the one in the picture. It's going to be elongated and rectangular, rather than tall and square. This will actually look less stark. If the top picture is your true inspiration (and it's gorgeous), my own choice is that kind of hood. Simple, clean, pyramidal, white. You have a shorter wall but also a smaller range so it should scale down well and still give you a similar visual impact. The big difference is that the converging lines draw the eye up on the pyramidal one, while the angular lines draw the eyes sideways on the rectangular one.

None of those are bad hoods. You should go with a 54" if you can for better coverage area and capture space. It will work much more efficiently but all of those are solid products. The Broan is a little on the cheaply made side, with more jagged edges and flimsier controls/lights. It will vent just fine, but that would be the only one I would leave out. If you can, get a 27" deep as well. If you max out your capture space you should be good to go.

We're looking at under-cabinet 36" range hoods. Our cooktop is a 5-burner 59K BTU (Bosch 800 series). I will never use all five burners at once. Maybe three burners on occasion, but typically only two at a time. My range hood wish list: Works with existing 6" ducting Baffle filters CFM: 400 min to 700 max Buttons (rather than switches or knobs) Quiet on low speeds. I expect noise at high speed! Under $700 Finding such a hood is harder than I thought, mainly because I like to read reviews and I'm having trouble finding any (or many). Here are the ones I've been looking at: Windster RA 34L - 520cfm. Would be perfect, but I hesitate because I simply can't find any reviews. Kobe's CHX91 - 680cfm. looks like everything we want, but apparently it's horrible to install. Zephyr Hurricane - 695cfm. Great reviews and price, but it has residue cups instead of filters. Does anyone have experience with this model? Is it hard to clean? Zephyr Tempest I - 650cfm. On sale, it's still a little out of our price range. I can't find many reviews of this one either. I'd love feedback on these or comparable hoods. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Thanks for the info. During my research, I found out Cavaliere's hood is actually 201 stainless, not 304 as listed in some website. I confirm with Cavaliere and told build.com, venting,direct.com. They agreed and thanks me for that, however, it still shows 304 SS in the website. That's misleading.

201 stainless steel has less nickel (replaced by manganese) but Allegheny-Ludlum claims the properties and appearance are nearly identical to type 304 (Use google to find "Why Make The Switch To Type 201 Stainless Steel?"). I don't know how nearly is nearly.
