The Sonya looks like some of the Chinese made hoods that are being marketed under various brand names (Euro Cavalier, Spagno Venuto (?), Ancona). I think they might be all the same manufacturer branded for different markets and retailers. I'm planning to go to the showroom to check out the ones that are on kitchenhoods.ca. From what I have read on this forum, the Chinese government has been subsidizing steel. We ended up buying a really nicely designed Chinese-made sink that was a deal, possibly because of the steel subsidy? These Chinese-made hood brands are a cheaper alternative to pro-style hoods from established brands. Reviews tend to be pretty good but few in number so it's hard to tell whether they have the quality that we are looking for. They publish their Sone ratings for each CFM setting, which I like. I'm looking at the kitchenhoods.ca Chinese-made ones, and Kobe.

I would also post in the Kitchen forum. You might get responses there. Also, check out Consumer Reports. They might have done a test on the one you're interested in. Without knowing the details about the particular Broan model you're interested in, I would be concerned that the hideaway feature might take away from its functionality. There are plenty of good looking range hoods out there, Broan included, that do not hideaway and that do not therefore raise that question.

Cheri Interesting thread - found myself scrolling and wondering - Personally, for a hood/ventilation I want function over form first - I agree with you - not wanting to overwhelm the space - If your range was centered on the wall I think I would be more convinced that ones above may work. I'd suggest posting in appliances for more input. There are a few experts who hang out there and not here. And I'd suggest taking a serious look at an induction range. I made the switch from gas a couple of years ago after researching on the appliances forum and would not willingly go back. Induction has all the power, faster adjustments and is easier to clean. And importantly in your situation the range itself isn't putting anything into the air to be vented. Most induction ranges have different electrical requirements from a standard electric radiant range so you would need to check whether you can swing that in your building.
