Two Box Turtles

The box turtle in the first picture dug a shallow hole at the base of a pine tree, hung her rear parts over the hole, then covered it back up. I assume she laid some eggs there, which is why I call her a "she."

This morning, I saw another turtle very close to where I saw the first turtle - which is almost right in front of my front steps. This turtle is obviously a different one. I've seen box turtle range maps, and I'm supposed to be right on the line between three-toed box turtles and gulf coast box turtles.

Does it look to you like the first one - the probable egg layer - is a gulf coast type and the second one a three-toed? I count 4 toes, but my field guide says that 3-toed box turtles sometimes have 4 - huh?
