Pond made for my turtles...
Comments (14)Its awfully enjoyable...the main differences with a turtle pond a fish pond is that (unless you have a VERY well fenced in yard) you have to build a small fence around the pond to keep the turtles from leaving. You also have to take into account that turtles aren't the most gentle of animals on your plants - so you'll really have to pack a lot of plants in there to keep your pond looking nice. A lot of the commonly available turtles are highly omnivorous and will just tear apart any of the plants you put in there. Redear sliders (Trachemys scripta) and Painted Turtles (Chrysemys picta) are the ones most commonly sold (and the cheapest) and they both love to snip water lilies off...but if you've got enough you can make a very nice pond. I'll include a photo of an old pond I had that housed some painted turtles and a slider - the key to keeping the pond looking nice is to keep small numbers of turtles in there. My old pond was around 2500 gallons and it only had 3 turtles in there...to give you an idea....See MoreBought house with koi pond/turtles- help!
Comments (4)We have a slider we got from a turtle rescue years ago. Repotmin is the recommended food to give them, but ours loves fish food, so when we feed him, we let him eat that. If you have plants like Anacharis, water lilies & water hyacinths, you don't need to feed them much when those are growing. Goldfish survive off almost nothing, but not sure about koi. Sliders love meat, but that's supposed to be given in moderation, supposedly fish but haven't seen him eat them but we also don't see lots of fry (baby fish), snails & slugs (we are loaded with those in Maryland.) They will eat bread and popcorn too. We get freezes here, so once the pond gets below 50 degrees we stop feeding the fish (it is bad for them to eat when it's below 50) and the turtle loses interest in food. They slow down to almost nothing in the winter so we only see him when we have a warm spell....See MoreTurtle eggs - what should I do?
Comments (8)Do you know what kind of a turtle or was it actually a tortise? The chicken wire is the best protection but make it turn down into the ground as much as possible 6" min if possible. leave the top bowed a little so as there is room for the hatchlings. I'm looking for a female Eastern Box for my big male. Either trade or on loan or a swap for offspring or other offers. We have plenty of room 30'x20' of herpifolia! email direct if desired clparks@patmedia.net or 908-295-1441 or send me your number -my telco is free! Thanks......See Morehow to keep a wild snapper turtle
Comments (16)Well I appologize for getting everyone worked up. I posted this on the GA gardener forum too, and updated that post to say that the turtle was on his own, I had him my garden area and he easily got out and took off, I actually never saw where he went. But he was only around for an afternoon at most. Long enough to enjoy some good ole GA peaches that I tossed to him....See Morecaroline94535
