Ten Minutes in Southeast Indiana (pics)

Sunday morning we had to leave our house while the realtor was showing it, and I was going to ride with my mother so I could save my gas. She asked me where I'd like to go for the hour or so. I pretended like I didnt care for a moment, then I nonchalantly suggested a little drive into southern Indiana. She asked me how far away it was and I didnt remember so I guessed about 20-30 minutes. Well, thats an hour round trip, so she was fine with that. Little did she know I was taking her for a little herping adventure. Bwah ha ha!

Well, it just so happened that I ended up driving us into the vincinity of the Milk Snake den I found a few weeks ago, so I thought I might as well stop by and check it out.

There are a bunch of tin sites in that area, but there are three that are really big, so I wanted to stop at those. Unfortunately, at one of them there was a truck parked in the driveway to the barn, and since I was probably trespassing, I skipped that one. Fortunately, the other two were not a disappointment.

Here's a habitat shot of the first tin site. You can't see it all, but there is a ton of stuff to flip here. Especially behind the big pile.

Here's a milk snake on top of the piece of tin I found him under.

Here's a dirty, but mammoth, milk snake. He was so big I thought he was a black rat until I pulled him completely out. He was definitely bigger than my 40 incher at home. I'd say he was pushing 4 ft.

Underneath that large piece of tin there were 5 milk snakes and two racers. And that was only under the part that I could lift, there were probably more under the rest.

This is at the den site about a quarter mile up the road. The first piece I lifted yielded 4 milk snakes, and then under another was a ringneck.

Totals:

9 Milk Snakes

2 Black Racers

1 Ringneck

Not too bad for ten minutes and a free herp trip. I'm sure I could have found more had I stopped at the 50 billion other tin sites along that road, but there is something about an impatient mother who has to use the bathroom that kinda puts a damper on things like flipping tin for snakes...
