East Kentucky Report (dial-up warning)

21 years ago

I made a spur-of-the-moment decision late Saturday night to get up at 3:30 am and head down to Red River Gorge in eastern Kentucky. I got there around 7:00 am and herped until about noon. After that it was getting up around 70F, making the tin sites useless. I was a little worried at first because the temps at 7:00 were hovering around 45-50 degrees, but after the sun came over the mountains, it warmed up nicely.

First find of the day was this rather large garter snake in the blue.

Copperhead - this guy didnt want his picture taken

{{gwi:1369053}}

King Snake - looks like he tangled with a coon or something

Normally I wouldnt bother posting a picture of a black racer in the blue, but I think I'll make an exception here.

I am 6 ft. even. When I held this guy above my head, or even with the top of it, his tail would still drag on the ground. I think this would have been a new record had I kept it. The current record is 73 inches. This one was at least 74, probably 75.

Milk snake

I was walking in some tall grass when the thought occured to me that this was perfect box turtle habitat. Not more than three seconds later I stepped on something that didnt feel right. I pulled this shy guy out of the weeds.

At the same tin site, I found this northern slimy salamander

{{gwi:1369067}}

...and also this water snake

{{gwi:1369068}}

...and also this racer in the blue. Thought it was a cool picture...

{{gwi:1369069}}

Another kingsnake found basking on a logpile

Black rat snake found at same site

{{gwi:1369071}}
