Big, Big Bird in Tree

We live about a half mile from Hood Canal in Washington. Last evening a huge (approx. 2 1/2 - 3 ft) bird flew overhead and landed in one of our very tall Douglas Fir trees. It had a long neck and was pretty much brown all over. It didn't say too long and had trouble balancing. The closest I've been able to come in my bird books is that it looked something like a young Cormorant. Do they ever fly up into the trees? I do have a picture and will try to upload it, but I've never done that before. Any help identifying this bird will be much appreciated!
