Some ideas please?

Hi folks,
I know this is a bit absurd, but I am not asking for an i.d. - just some ideas. Saw a flock of birds at a distance in a cultivated field today (N.W. Georgia). It was such a distance that they may have been as large as duck size; it's just difficult to say as there was little around to reference. The fascinating aspect was the flash of what seemed to be the underwing and possibly part of the body that flashed silvery white. It was quite bright and seemed to have an almost reflective quality, hence the 'silvery' description.
I'm no expert, but I've been watching birds in our geographic area for years and never saw anything quite like this. I have a real lack of experience with ducks though. Mostly what we see are Coots, Wood ducks, Mallards, and Scaups, Canvasbacks, etc. I was wondering if these could have been some sort of duck or possibly a shorebird. We have had some good rain the past couple of days and perhaps the field had some standing water they were interested in... .
Any ideas would be very welcome and thanks for your time,
Ginger
