Mealworms in winter and Mealworm Damage?

I raise mealworms for my reptiles but when they morph in pupae Ive been tossing them outside in my yard for birds and wild life. Lately Ive been reading about mealworms chewing on wooden supports and doing damage. Will the cold weather kill the pupae and will animals eat them if they are dead? It gets down to about 22 degrees at night. Also is it a good idea to just toss them out or is this dangerous as its releasing pests into the wild.

Thanks,
