mealworm question

I have been raising mealworms since last spring, and I have a question for anyone that raises their own mealworms. I started a fresh box with new beetles 2 1/2 months ago. The tiny larva showed up when expected. However they never seemed to increse in numbers and they never seemed to get any bigger. The other times I had done this, I moved the beetles out after a month to start in a new box and just let the mealworms grow out. I eneded up with swarming masses of them. This time there are so few, even though they've had more time. I am wondering, is it likely that the adult beetles are consuming their offspring? I have looked at samples of the substrate under a microscope and have found nothing unusual (ie: no sign of mites). Do those of you that raise your own mealworms move the adult beetles out after a certain amount of time, or leave them in?
