pics of some of the birds that are confusing me

Hi! Here are the pictures of some of the birds that I am not sure about. As I stated in my other posting, I'm having a hard time w/ sparrow id's, as well as a couple of other id's. Sorry for the poor quality of the photos.

Pic #1: The bird in the bush, not the black-capped chickadee in feeding tray.

Pic #2: House Sparrow?

Pic #3: The beak on this one has me confused..it's long and pointy, almost like a nuthatch beak.

Pic #4: Same Bird as #3...I just cannot find this in my bird book

Pic #5: Male House Sparrow?

Pic #6: In the bush, behind where the squirrel baffle is.

Pic #7: And lastly, is this a Downy Woodpecker or a Hairy Woodpecker?

I was looking through someone's photos (gorgeous photos!) and I think number 3/4 is a Carolina Wren!

Hey, that's why I love posting here, because I'm definitely NOT a know-it-all. I need backup. :D It all happened so quickly (gliding, landing, sitting pretty), but I really think it had a banded tail with darker colors! I know the chest was white, with brown vertical speckles, if that makes sense. I took the camera out yesterday morning, as I will today, but it didn't show up. There is another bird, though, maybe someone can ID for me. Again, not a very good pic, but it's one of a few birds that have been hanging around. They have a weird flight pattern, where they take off from their perch, swoop out (or up) and around, returning to their perch, almost like a boomerang (or like they're snagging some insects in mid-air?). Anyway, I've mentioned it before as having a light yellow front, and you can just see some peeking out from above the tail in this pic. They usually hang around in pairs, and they're very protective of their "area". This is the one and only time any of them have ventured this close to the house, that I've seen, anyway. It was very hot that day, and it definitely wasn't doing the swoop thing. Maybe someone can help! :) Brenda

Jane, if you only have one feeder out, you might try a good mixture with black oil sunflower seeds stirred into it. Don't get the cheapie kind with those little reddish-brown "BB's" in it. I have never seen ANYTHING actually eat those. I get mine at PetSmart, and I really love the Stokes mixture that has no hulls in it. I feed it, black oiler sunflowers and safflower seed. Safflower seed goes into a feeder that doesn't have squirrel protection, because they don't really like it, but cardinals and titmice do. HOWEVER, no matter what you are feeding, there will be times when birds are not around for various reasons. I have hardly any right now, mostly due to a pair of hawks hanging about our neighborhood. And even without the hawks, birds often disappear for a few weeks now and then. One more thing...don't forget that WATER is probably even more important than seed in luring birds to your yard. You'll notice that most of Maureen's pictures feature her great birdbath. Be sure to provide several "baths" around the yard. They can be anything from decorative features to trashcan lids on the ground with 2" of water in them. I often turn clay pots upside down and put a clay saucer on top for water. Keep the water CLEAN and shallow, maybe even adding a rock in the center for birds to stand on. Good luck! Marcia

How nice this thread got bumped! I enjoyed re-reading it and thinking about how much the yard has changed in a year. My bird-friendly yard is evolving. Have made great progress removing invasives, particularly Bittersweet, Buckthorn, and Norway Maples (treework cost me $2000 last year and there's still one GINORMOUS Norway maple left). There was a lot of brush created by all this tree/shrub work. Some was burned this Spring, right smack in the middle of the Oriental bittersweet patch, but the rest is in piles. The brush piles attract a lot of birds, particularly Sparrows, Cardinals, Juncos, and Wrens. The birds also love the back half-acre, which is wild and full of Crabapples, Choke Cherries, White Pine, and still some invasives like Honeysuckle and Autumn olive. Also making great progress on growing bird-friendly natives. Purchased another 50 native tree/shrub seedlings from the NH Nursery. That makes 130 total between this year and last - all of which ultimately make berries/nuts for the birds and wildlife. Most of them are in holding beds and haven't flowered yet, too little, but I've given away some and started to plant out a few. I winter-sowed many native species of perennials, annuals, and vines. Exactly where all this stuff is going, is not completely clear at this point, but I'm creating lasagne beds like crazy! The birds are always flitting around the yard and it's only going to get more interesting and fruitful for them (hopefully). It's great!

Jeanne, your bird pictures are beautiful. Snow pictures always look so pretty, but I know what a hassle it can be to have to shovel it. So good that you feed the birds, poor things, everything is all covered up! I have Berber carpeting too, Jeanne, we put it in when we moved here about eleven years ago. Mine is showing wear in the traffic areas like in front of the couch and love seat, and I found it harder to clean with my steam vac because it was so "textured"--but I loved the look and it was really the "in" thing at that time. Now I need to see about replacing mine too, probably with more carpet unless the flooring guys think they could "blend" new wood in with what's already in my entry and hallway. Wish I would have just put wood in there to start, but we thought it would feel too "cold". Now I realize we could have used an area rug! Live and learn, right? LOL On your new vinyl flooring--make sure you follow the directions for cleaning. Just a slightly damp mop and don't use any other products unless it's something reccommended by the mfg. I used one of those Swiffer wet pads on mine and it left a "film" so it doesn't shine like when new now. And remember, liquids are it's enemy! Other than that, it is almost indestrucible and easy to clean. Enjoy! Luvs

I believe that numbers 3 and 4 are of a Carolina wren (I had one nest in my yard this summer).

I think the woodpecker is a Downy, judging by its size relative to the suet hanger, and he looks like all my Downies here.

The rest I don't know, but most of them look like sparrows of some kind (I see what you meant in your earlier post!)

Looks like you have plenty of House Sparrows, one with white in its wings, a Carolina Wren and a Downey Woodpecker. All of your Sparrows are House Sparrows in these pics, a mixure of juvies, males and females. There was one year I had a young House Sparrow that had white in its wings and tail feathers, never did get a pic of it but it looked really different like that one of yours does. Not sure what you have in your feeders but if you are feeding seed with millet or corn in it you may want to switch to something without those in so as to not attract the House Sparrows as much.

:( I don't want the house sparrows..not even the oddball weird looking ones! I don't feed anything that has corn or millet in it......but I used to. Perhaps they are still scrounging old seeds out of the grass. I don't really see them on my feeders much, mainly pecking around on the ground or perched in the bushes. On second thought...I think the Birdola Woodpecker treats might have some millet in them....maybe I should switch those to peanut butter suets

1. I'm going to guess a Field Sparrow. Notice the light colored line is above the eye, and the line directly through (or behind) the eye is dark. Plus the top of the head appears reddish. Also the beak looks pinkish, where a house sparrow's beak is yellowish.

2. I don't get the white, but it looks like a Field Sparrow also.
3 & 4 are most certainly Carolina Wrens.
5. Male House Sparrow
6. I can't tell.
7. Yup, a Downy
