My Pond w/pics : Plant and Turtle Suggestions?
Comments (7)I'm not a turtle expert, I'll leave that to someone else. I had never seen a tree frog in my area until I put in my pond and last summer I had 12 at a time walking on the siding of the house near it. You may want to try dwarf varieties of water lilies. Dwarf "Sioux" is one of my favorites, its 6" pads nearly cover my 5'x5' pond if I don't trim it back once or twice, and its a prolific bloomer (even when I forget to fertilize it). Water canna lilies are vigorous growers and good for your back wall. My dwarf gets 3-4' high, and one with nice varigated leaves would be 6-8' if it wasn't root-bound :) Pickeral rush comes in purple and white, dwarf and regular. My dwarfs get to be 1 1/2 - 2' high and bloom all summer. And you can't beat water iris for nice foliage to cover the wall too. I got a nice big handful of plants here on the exchange last spring and they were bursting from the 5 pots I planted by fall (about 3' tall). My dwarf papyrus tends to be slow starting, but maybe I'm not treating it right. Don't forget oxygenators for the fish, and I think Parrot Feather would be great in the top. Floaters like WH, water cress and water lettuce are wonderful filters. Bigger plants won't go over the falls, but azolla probably would. You might try a water forget-me-not tucked in the rocks, they love flowing water. If they spread too much you just rip out a bunch and compost it. Good to keep the fish load down - my 6 feeder goldfish equalled 28 in one short summer, so plan on sharing. Your pond is lovely, I can see why you stuck to your guns to have your vision come out just right! Good luck and happy spring!...See MoreA few pics of the pond and some pond life...
Comments (30)Jayinflorida: How do you prevent your goldfish from eating the snails? I was thinking about trying to find some snails for the pond that came with the house we just bought, but read pretty much everywhere that goldfish would eat them. I'm also having trouble finding snails that won't be invasive and will last the winters (I'm in New England). Any suggestions? The reason is because of the pond sludge problem that I'm hoping snails would help with. We do have a (mechanical) filter, and some water flow that we hope to turn back into a waterfall soon. We currently have 7 goldfish in about a 500 gal pond, and from reading this forum, some of the plants are apparently water lilies. Not sure what the others are, yet. :) Thanks! Comments (12)Not to worry guys - the endeavour is to share knowledge as much as possible as many others do here. I have to make a disclaimer before stating my opinion - there are for sure more knowledgeable people than me here so take what I say with that in mind. Having said that, my personal experience is that the DEPTH of the pot matters little in terms of fruit production at least regarding being TOO SHALLOW - witness the planter in the pics - the soil 5 inches deep and the planter tapers so it is thinner at the bottom. There are 3 plants with many fruit in that little thing. Of course there is width/length involved but not much in terms of volume. Being TOO DEEP may encourage the plant to grow prodigious roots and prevent plant/fruit growth - I really don't know, but it is something to consider. So to answer your question - If it's me I go with more plants.I have never used HID lights so I don't know what other variables there are - I just use regular fluorescent bulbs over the plants. Hope this is helpful, Ravi...See Moresockmonkeyz6
