How much time do you spend birdwatching?

I ask because I spend a LOT of time -- is this normal? I am beginning to wonder what my neighbors must think of me (and they don't see half of what I do!)

i am retired and home all day and my brother who is an invalid stays here so i don't leave home much. I have my feeders outside of the kitchen window with a pair of binoculars and a point and shoot camera next to the window. every time i go into the kitchen i take time to look outside I also do some container gardening out there too and go out 3 or 4 times a day and check on things and weed and water ect. There are two outside chairs one in the garden and another near the porch that i can sit and watch from. so my watching is 5 or ten minutes at a time but as often as two or three times an hour. so i guess if you add it up i could amount to 3 hours or more a day.

All mulch provides an attractive place for slugs:dark, cool, moist. However, healthy plants will fend off all but the worst damage. If you're really worried about it, sow crushed egg shells around the perimeters of your plants. They are said to cut the slugs' bodies. Honest. If your (organic) garden is in a healthy balance, frogs and other small critters will come and eat the slugs and keep them from getting out of hand. (The exception to this might be the Pacific Northwest. I have read that they have monster slugs...) If there are perennial (or annual) weeds growing in the mulch, they will work their way up to the sunlight. When you see them first appear, pull them. The thicker your mulch the fewer will be the weeds. Since your paths are grassy, you will definitely have to fight grass encroachment. You might try a cut edge around your beds like perennial gardeners use. Personally, I have mulched paths with nothing growing in them. You should not mulch right up to the stem of the plants. Leave a couple of inches of bare space around each one to avoid rot problems.

i began switching my houseplants - mostly aglaonemas - into a hydroculture set up about 2+ years ago. i tend to use the Pot-in-Saucer method described in the link below. the beauty of this type of grow method is that it is basically impossible to over water plants. and the water line in the clear saucer makes it simple enough that a 5th grader can figure out if you need to add more. so it's nearly impossible to under water either. this past year my husband's father became ill and died, and we've been away for long stretches of time. by placing the pots in larger reservoir tubs, and having a friend drop by to check on things once in a while, i've been able to be gone for 3 or 4 weeks at a time, multiple times, without losing any plants. they can easily go 2 weeks without anyone checking on them. [when i'm home, i place the plants back in the smaller reservoir trays because i think that it's healthier for them. this gives them about a 1 to 2 week watering interval for most plants.] i feel like i'm still learning about my method - for instance, proper fertilization levels and such - but most plants have done well for me. i'm convinced that if i hadn't made the switch, i wouldn't have any surviving plants after this past year... and unfortunately, the next few years are likely to be more of the same. if anyone is interested in this method, check out the link below. there is also a lot of good info on the First Ray's website. his information is mostly slanted toward orchids, but it applies to houseplants as well. please don't think i'm implying that this method is 'no work' or 'perfect', but the question was about vacations, and i think that this is where this method shines. the snags, or complaints, are that the pots are heavy, the Hydroton media is expensive, and if you don't water and fertilize properly you can salt up the media and kill your plants. and if you decide to give it a try, as with any dramatic change... try switching a few test plants first, not your prized specimen or your grandmother's favorite plant. cheers, nancy Here is a link that might be useful: Houseplant Hydroculture

Same for me, as much as possible. I still work full time too, but I retired in '06 from the Navy reserve, so at least now I have my weekends. I go out in the mornings and walk around the garden to look at everything while I drink my coffee. In the afternoons, I get outside as quickly as possible so that I'm really dirty by the time DH gets home. I know that if I look really scroungy and sweaty he won't ask me to make dinner. And of course, housecleaning, laundry and dishes are out of the question too. So I'd say about 4-5 hours on the weekdays, 10-12 hours on weekends. I confess, I hired an electrician to run a wire out to the potting shed and install a light and some outlets so I can stay out after dark. I also had electricity run to the greenhouse for the heater and swamp cooler and have 6 extra outlets in there too. I have everything out there now but a KITCHEN and who needs one of those??????!!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH......... Cheryl

With varicose veins, that they did one shrink job on when they'd planned four, at least, and I'm wearing squeezy knee-high socks, I'm to move around ... and move legs when I'm sitting at computer, reading, writing, etc. ... which I do - some. But less than I should. Clots on lungs just over two weeks after the first shrink shot (shooting irritant foam into a vein while guided by untrasound, to make the vein close off) made them unwilling to do more of them. I get up and move around occasionally. But, on the computer, if it sits idle for a short while, I get that, "Hey are ya still there?" notice ... ... and if I don't click within a minute - everything disappears - right back to basics. Makes bathroom breaks a beast! o j

Hmmmm....I spend a lot more time during the winter and participate in 4 bird counts, including Project Feederwatch from December-March. During those months it could average 1 hour per day (more on count days, less other days).

During the rest of the year, I watch them more casually, because I am more engrossed in gardening. Sometimes I will actively watch and photograph, when something special is going on, i.e. Bluebirds nesting in the backyard snags, a flock of Cedar Waxwings eating the Crabapples, a couple yellow-rumped Warblers flitting through the perennials catching bugs, etc.

With your love of watching birds, it sounds like you are a great candidate for participating in bird counts, if you don't already!

Good question deanie! I am watching them ANYtime that I am outside, and I do have feeders just outside several windows too. I like to be able to sit on the porch with the binocs and camera on hand for some period of time each day, but I don't always get there. Winter is a good time to see more of them with the leafless trees. I really love to watch them scurry around when a snow is coming in.

not enough! i have four little boys ages 4 mo, 2, 4, and 6. they do love to watch the birds at our feeders fromour windows, but if we're outside forget it. thy are way too little to sit patiently and quietly observe, lol!

The only time that I stop, is when I'm sleeping. I don't even stop for driving.(not recomended)
