How much time do you spend birdwatching?

I ask because I spend a LOT of time -- is this normal? I am beginning to wonder what my neighbors must think of me (and they don't see half of what I do!)

i am retired and home all day and my brother who is an invalid stays here so i don't leave home much. I have my feeders outside of the kitchen window with a pair of binoculars and a point and shoot camera next to the window. every time i go into the kitchen i take time to look outside I also do some container gardening out there too and go out 3 or 4 times a day and check on things and weed and water ect. There are two outside chairs one in the garden and another near the porch that i can sit and watch from. so my watching is 5 or ten minutes at a time but as often as two or three times an hour. so i guess if you add it up i could amount to 3 hours or more a day.

All mulch provides an attractive place for slugs:dark, cool, moist. However, healthy plants will fend off all but the worst damage. If you're really worried about it, sow crushed egg shells around the perimeters of your plants. They are said to cut the slugs' bodies. Honest. If your (organic) garden is in a healthy balance, frogs and other small critters will come and eat the slugs and keep them from getting out of hand. (The exception to this might be the Pacific Northwest. I have read that they have monster slugs...) If there are perennial (or annual) weeds growing in the mulch, they will work their way up to the sunlight. When you see them first appear, pull them. The thicker your mulch the fewer will be the weeds. Since your paths are grassy, you will definitely have to fight grass encroachment. You might try a cut edge around your beds like perennial gardeners use. Personally, I have mulched paths with nothing growing in them. You should not mulch right up to the stem of the plants. Leave a couple of inches of bare space around each one to avoid rot problems.

"DD's theory is that due to the global financial crisis, fashion has come to a grinding halt. Nothing new. So the trend lag between here and Europe has collapsed and we're seeing the same stuff everywhere. This is from my 16 y.o. fashion analyst! :-)" Out of the mouths of babes... The Italians are over, this week, and are doing all they can to help the American economy. They came with huge lists from their family and friends. It's all Abercrombie & Fitch. That brand has taken Italy by storm, maybe the rest of Europe, too. They used to buy only Polo. I guess the lines at their stores go on forever and the prices are absurd. With the exchange rate...they're in heaven. We had a dinner last night and I forgot to ask what Italian brand was hot now. Last time it was Roberto Cavalli but his things are way too young for me. I'll stick with Armani if I'm still alive to see the dollar reign, once more.

I cut my long hair in August,now my hair takes me seconds to do. As for makeup-none on a daily basis. It just rubs off on my surgical mask at work. For a night out, or if I want to impress my makeup takes me 10 minutes but I rarely wear it. I am lucky that at 52 I have good skin. Still nice and tight (on my face that is). My only issue is brown spots from sun exposure while golfing, but that is easily covered. I learned my lesson and religiously wear spf 50 from oil of olay regenerist every day.

My DH says I take WAY too much time making the decisions I have to make with our house projects. I'm the sole researcher, designer, planner and a co-hands-on executor (with DH) of our DIY building projects. It took us 5 years to do this last house. Plan, design, and contract the build. I designed and had a draftsman draw prints. I was the chick with the clipboard until the rockers left. From drywall on it has primarily been just the two of us. He has a full time job that is not building. We have made a good team, in that he has the expertise- I have the vision. We have put in countless hours making the decisions that go into these projects. Thankfully I found GW early on with researching windows. Google has led me to GW on numerous topics, which answered most of the trying technical issues. I usually only post when I get really stuck and need outside input and opinions. Mostly on decorating questions...;) IDK -- is 5 years too long to come up with a house from scratch? DIY? I have no idea; I do know my DH thought I belabored the process. As in it was a huge issue- how long I would take. But it was lots of design as you go stuff. However he is happy with the result.

Hmmmm....I spend a lot more time during the winter and participate in 4 bird counts, including Project Feederwatch from December-March. During those months it could average 1 hour per day (more on count days, less other days).

During the rest of the year, I watch them more casually, because I am more engrossed in gardening. Sometimes I will actively watch and photograph, when something special is going on, i.e. Bluebirds nesting in the backyard snags, a flock of Cedar Waxwings eating the Crabapples, a couple yellow-rumped Warblers flitting through the perennials catching bugs, etc.

With your love of watching birds, it sounds like you are a great candidate for participating in bird counts, if you don't already!

Good question deanie! I am watching them ANYtime that I am outside, and I do have feeders just outside several windows too. I like to be able to sit on the porch with the binocs and camera on hand for some period of time each day, but I don't always get there. Winter is a good time to see more of them with the leafless trees. I really love to watch them scurry around when a snow is coming in.

not enough! i have four little boys ages 4 mo, 2, 4, and 6. they do love to watch the birds at our feeders fromour windows, but if we're outside forget it. thy are way too little to sit patiently and quietly observe, lol!

The only time that I stop, is when I'm sleeping. I don't even stop for driving.(not recomended)
