Wow birding nut. You have really good eyes. I'd have not been able to ID with the small pic! Kate, I am in NW GA, and I have a pair of the Great Crested Flycatchers nesting in my yard each summer. They arrived here on April 29th this year, so yours would get to you sooner. They are so special and wonderful to have around. I am trying to establish a Purple Martin colony, and it was that housing that attracted the Flycatchers in. Obviously, I cannot allow them to use the Martin housing. I hung a plastic gourd on a shepherd's hook in an open space, and they took right to it. They return from South America each year to nest. Such a thrill to see them come in!~Angie
thank you! i have never seen one of those before, so thats exciting. sorry about the little pic- i was doing good to get that posted! bandjzmom- i am heading your direction next weekend. my mom rented a cabin outside of helen and i am soo looking forward to it. i would love to do some birding but it will probably be minimal w/ all my kiddos in tow! i looked on my camera and i took the pic of the flycatcher on july 12th. if you saw yours in april i dont know why mine wouldbe so late, but i was glad to see it!
Sounds like a fun time in Helen Kate! I am keeping a nature journal this year, so I know that my GCF's arrived in the yard on April 29th and were gone from here by June 18th. Maybe you caught one that was migrating back to South America. Click on the link, and you can see a pic of the pair that I had this year. Flip through my other Photobucket pics, and you will see a pic of their nest with 4 eggs inside. They bring a lot of snakeskin into their nests to scare off predators! I've always marveled at how easily they find the snakeskin. I bet I couldn't find a piece if my life depended on it!
