Bird ID help please?

We live in Washington State, on Orcas Island. I've been able to ID lots of birds since we moved here in 06 and really enjoy it.
This bird has been pecking at my office door and perching on the handle for days, seeing his reflection and thinking it's an adversary I guess. Anyway, my husband took a picture of it and I was thinking it was probably a sparrow, but then saw a photo of a merlin in our bird book and it looked so much like it. This bird is small though, like 6". Could anyone tell me what kind of bird this is?
