a woodpecker log is easy to make. just take a piece of limb or trunk or even a piece of 4x4. dry is best. take a drill and drill some large holes in the sides of it screw a hook or screw eye into it and hang it from your shepards hook or feeder pole either made from pvc pipe or if it metal or wood baffle the pole so the squirrels can'r climb it.
stuff the holes with peanut butter mixed with cornmeal or oats or mix some lard or shortning in it and they can hang from the log and the chickadees and nuthatches will like it too

Woodpeckers use their tail as sort of a third leg when clinging to a vertical surface ... so a tail rest beneath the hole would be good.

Woodpeckers love raw suet as well as suet mixtures. I feed raw suet in a suet cage during the winter, and also have made a home-made peanut butter/suet mixture for almost 4 years that I put into a suet log, or crumble in a tray. They both attract many types of birds besides woodpeckers.

I planted sunflowers for the first time this year. Glad I did because the jays love them, they've been here every day. I'm going to plant a few more next year.

i also plant a square of sunflowers in the back yard but with mine it's the chickadees that i see most on them. Last year i had more than what the birds were eating and saved some heads and put out seed over the winter. but this year they will have stripped the heads before long.

I've found that the best suet for woodpeckers is the pure suet without seeds. It's the seeds that attract those annoying squirrels and other birds. They peck at it to get to the seeds and spit out the suet. When I put out the plain suet it lasts much longer. It's hard to find in the stores, but I get it online at Nottawa bird supply.
