Some recent birds....lots of pictures

This summer we have been very lucky to have a family of cardinals come to our feeders. It has been such a joy to watch the antics of this family as they have grown, I have truly enjoyed them. Now as young adults they are still returning to the feeders and don't seem quite so afraid of me when I try to photograph them.

We have also had a return of purple finches that we haven't seen in some years.

And a downy woodpecker has been visiting quite regularly.

I'm not the best photographer but I hope you enjoy these photos.

Mom feeding one little one that just didn't want to grow up. This little one carried on for days and days wanting to be fed by mom and dad.

It was so much fun to look at your photos! It looks like you had an enjoyable summer with your birds - and the cardinal youngsters are so adorable. Your landscape also looks pretty and very bird-friendly. It's neat to see what others have done with their space.

By any chance, did you ever see where the cardinals' nest was? Just curious. We have had cardinals in and out of our yard here this summer, but I have never seen a nest or even seen them retreat to a particular space, they just come to the crabapple tree and make a quick run to the feeder, then back to the tree, and back to wherever their "homebase" is.

You will no doubt be enjoying your cardinals throughout the winter, which will be fun. Thanks for sharing -

purpleinpop - The jade is fairly new .. I got it in a trade last month.. the person wasn't sure if it was gullom or hobbit (I think that was the other option) and I don't know a thing about jades so I'm just letting it hang out and see what happens. Yes, that's a Prince of Orange. I've been wanting a Pink Princess but no luck so far. That particular callisia is from my grandmother's house. They didn't know what it was. They have it planted in a plastic dollar store bucket and just take it in and out throughout the years. I cut off those pieces to bring home (without knowing what it was) so I just stuck it in water til I figured it out lol ... Then, I was told it was a callisia. It doesn't look like my other one :) (my other callisia is growing beautifully outside under a tree btw) - Then it was pointed out in a post that it's the same plant so it will get potted up soon. The Begonia -- That came from my grandmother's house. She has it planted outside under the hostas. Never touches it. Leaves it out year round. It comes back and spreads year after year. I got a few pieces when I was there a couple weeks ago. My aunt who is still living there had no idea what it is, just that it spreads. So I don't know much about it other than it is old lol. I brought it in to see if I could grow it indoors and I still have some in a pot outside. I haven't planted it yet to see what it will do. No I use Splenda,i tried stevia once but to me it left a bitter after taste,so I continued with the splenda. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes this past feb,so had to change my way of eating and what I eat.I have lost 32 # since then.So I have to limit my fruit intake as well and what a shame,i used to eat a lot of it especially when the trees were loaded like now. The birds are what eat a lot of our peaches,they take a bite here and there and go from peach to peach.Really ticks me off. That's crazy about the red passion vine you had,my dh doesn't let ours get out of control.Some times he trims things too much. We're retired so we spend a lot of time in the gardens,and we both love it.In fact i'm waiting for the sun to move now so I can go finish cleaning the garden I started cleaning yesterday. Things are really getting stressed now. Some plants are definitely having an off year, with splotchy and bleached-out flowers. Another several days of this, and the garden will take a turn to the south. Yes, I divided Clown Parade three years ago, and the divisions now have tall scapes. Helped along by the rain, I am sure. Lavender Green Eyed Lady is an earlier bloomer on a tall scape. It has performed reliably. By that hybridizer that produced Painted Demon (which by the way, is all washed out this year). White is the hybridizer. Rosie with a Ring has 14 buds with three-way branching. You may sneer at that, but it is good for the North. I divided it two years ago.

Those cardinal juvies are so very cute! Lucky you, we have very few cardinals in our area - I've only seen one in my yard once. I love the babies. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the lovely comments. I really enjoy watching all the birds come around the yard, now that the cooler weather is here they come more to the feeders again.

Chickadeemelrose...no I have never found the cardinal nest. I had seen a cardinal as a child I waited 30 some years to see them again so to have several pairs here is just wonderful for me. We have had them here now for several years and I am just thrilled!

we have cardinals come to our feeders. our resident family had a lengthy discussion about property law and access to resources with another family a few weeks ago. this was the mothers and juveniles. then daddy showed up and it was discussion over.
