Some recent birds....lots of pictures

This summer we have been very lucky to have a family of cardinals come to our feeders. It has been such a joy to watch the antics of this family as they have grown, I have truly enjoyed them. Now as young adults they are still returning to the feeders and don't seem quite so afraid of me when I try to photograph them.

We have also had a return of purple finches that we haven't seen in some years.

And a downy woodpecker has been visiting quite regularly.

I'm not the best photographer but I hope you enjoy these photos.

Mom feeding one little one that just didn't want to grow up. This little one carried on for days and days wanting to be fed by mom and dad.

Looks like you'll have to get some baffles for your feeder poles!

It was so much fun to look at your photos! It looks like you had an enjoyable summer with your birds - and the cardinal youngsters are so adorable. Your landscape also looks pretty and very bird-friendly. It's neat to see what others have done with their space.

By any chance, did you ever see where the cardinals' nest was? Just curious. We have had cardinals in and out of our yard here this summer, but I have never seen a nest or even seen them retreat to a particular space, they just come to the crabapple tree and make a quick run to the feeder, then back to the tree, and back to wherever their "homebase" is.

You will no doubt be enjoying your cardinals throughout the winter, which will be fun. Thanks for sharing -

I enjoyed looking at your photos! I can't say that I like those robber flies. I saw one with a Monarch cat one time. It had consumed half of it, and it flew off with the other half when it saw me (I think that's why it flew off with it anyway). Grrr! We try to save as many as we can, but we can only do so much. There are so many predators out there just watching and waiting for them. I also have trouble with wasps getting to my BST cats if I don't bring them in. A few years ago the last four "butterflies" to eclose were actually wasps. They had overwintered and I was really disappointed when those came out of the pupas instead of the Black Swallowtails. I think it was the very first year that I raised them. After that I have become more diligent at watching the host plants and bringing them in as soon as possibly, preferably in the egg stage. Cathy

The frames alone are worth way more than $10! How exciting if the paintings are authentic! All your finds are cool. DH loves to go to estate sales looking for things like what you've found. He hasn't found any valuable paintings, but we do have an old Oster blender and an old GE toaster that we use, both from the '50's, I believe. Sally

You all are INCREDIBLY kind! I wish you could have seen this house when I bought it in 1986. It looked like a little red school house with white trim and black shutters. The back yard was a ravine with dying trees in it, and the shed was next to the house where the garage is now. There were no gardens...I was younger then and dove in and worked hard as I LOVED the house from the moment I saw it, with the blazing wood stove in the kitchen,(now in the cellar) which had dark home made cabinets and 24" of counter space, and a vinyl 'brick' floor. Oldhouse - It makes me think of your journey that you are on with your house now, although mine only dates to 1937. I have touched every square inch of this place and added some square feet! It'll be 25 years that I have had it this December, and I love it even more today, as it's perfect for me and my doggie kids. I have truly enjoyed working in the house and yard all of those years. It sure doesn't happen over night. So anyone who thinks that it's nice; I am very grateful that my love for my home shows. It's been a long time coming. My taste has been 'honed' over the years, from the blue and pink of the 80's, to what it is today, thank goodness! And, I know that I talk about eBay and Craigslist often, but they have helped me immensely with wonderful unique items. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR THE WONDERFUL COMMENTS ABOUT MY HOME!

Those cardinal juvies are so very cute! Lucky you, we have very few cardinals in our area - I've only seen one in my yard once. I love the babies. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the lovely comments. I really enjoy watching all the birds come around the yard, now that the cooler weather is here they come more to the feeders again.

Chickadeemelrose...no I have never found the cardinal nest. I had seen a cardinal as a child I waited 30 some years to see them again so to have several pairs here is just wonderful for me. We have had them here now for several years and I am just thrilled!

we have cardinals come to our feeders. our resident family had a lengthy discussion about property law and access to resources with another family a few weeks ago. this was the mothers and juveniles. then daddy showed up and it was discussion over.
