Some recent thrift store finds

I think I hit a mini jackpot the other day at the Habitat for Humanity Restore. I noticed these two little oil paintings sitting on a shelf marked at $10 each. They're oil on panel, not canvas and about 14 x 10, the picture portion that is, not including the matting and frame. Each frame weighs a ton and from the reverse are obviously old. I goggled the name E. Hayes (Edwin Hayes) 1820-1904 and turns out he was a fairly prolific UK maritime and coastal painter. These two pictures are of Bamburgh Castle on the NE coast of England. They're nice too. I hope they're not fakes so I'm going to take them to an art gallery sometime for confirmation. If they are originals which I'm thinking they are then they're probably worth around $800-1000 each at auction after looking at all the Hayes auctions stuff on the web. If it does turn out they're real this will be the second time I've found some valuable art at a thrift store.

Then it was off to Value Village where for $3.99 I hooked this nice hand painted Satsuma vase. Not valuable really but it'll look good over at moms

Also at Value Village.. this chromalicious Oster blender, actually an Oster rebadged for sale at Eatons Dept Store, to add to the collection

You need the coat to go check out your garden or see what is buried under snow at least or shovel it, can't work out if you are cold! I think the cat is a hoot!! I'd smile every time I went by it! The shovel & rooster plaques are really neat too. Great haul & wonderful prices! Jan

That is sure a pretty pattern on your new china. Fantastic buy, not often that you can find a complete set. I know you are really going to enjoy it. Ncnana, I feel the same way--tastes have changed over the years, probably would pick something different now. Only problem with a complete set is that we almost never use the cups and saucers, yet they take up so much space to store. Luvs

Hmmm...I could write up a HUGE list, I love my area thrift store. The best deals for this summer though... Pottery Barn decor for $1 each that I found in the catalog from the winter for no less than $50 each. A set of LeCrueset cookware still in the box for $25. A box of what the seller called junk...that ended up having an almost complete set of antique french flatware, several great ironstone pieces (my first ones - yay!), and more great antique and vintage kitchen wares than one could possibly hope for - for the bargain price of $5. OMG...I almost felt bad when I got home and researched what I bought. But I had to remind myself - one man's trash is another man's treasure...and this was a treasure for sure in my world.

Way cool finds!

I really like those two paintings - I hope they do turn out to be authentic. Do you plan on keeping them or would you sell them and turn the nice profit? Either way, great eye and I'm glad you got the other two goodies too.

I think the paintings and the vase are really lovely!

I love visiting the second hand and thrift stores when I'm in Sidney, B.C. and usually bring back a small piece of Indian brass.
Can't resist scrounging around for a bargain.

The frames alone are worth way more than $10! How exciting if the paintings are authentic! All your finds are cool.

DH loves to go to estate sales looking for things like what you've found. He hasn't found any valuable paintings, but we do have an old Oster blender and an old GE toaster that we use, both from the '50's, I believe.

so I took the vase over to moms and last night I went back to VV and lo and behold another of the exact same vase so I have one now as well. LOL

I love those paintings! I hope they are valuable, but would keep them for myself no matter what.

Good eye! Congratulations on your holiday shopping, whether it was for the holiday or not. Some of my favorite ''things'' have come from the thrift store.

I showed this to my DH, who's an artist, and he said if the frames are original, and he thinks they probably are, they're worth a couple hundred dollars each by themselves. If the frames are original, it seems logical that the paintings are too. Good luck!

DH couldn't tell anything other than it looks really old, so he's guessing they're original. Can't wait to hear what the appraiser says.
