Old bird book

I have a book that my grandfather had when he was young. The name of it is "New York State Museum Birds of New York 1914". The pages of the painting half are mostly separated from the binding because when I visited my grandparents that was my favorite thing to do- look at the paintings in this book. When my grandparents died, this book was the only thing I wanted. Now, I still love the book but I'm 64 yrs. old and I worry about who would want things like this and other vintage things from my family when I die. Sorry to sound so morbid but you know, we never know!!

What do other people with family who don't care to have these things do? Any ideas welcome.

They might be more interested than you think. If they're the type to just throw out "junk", put it in a special box marked "save" and put a hand written note in with it telling why it's special to you and maybe a photo of you and your grandfather together. If you show it to your grandkids now and tell them how special it is, they'll remember that.

Christie that's such a good idea. I could make up a couple of boxes of the most special things and label them "save". I keep thinking that just because the adults in my family don't want old things, doesn't mean that my grandchildren won't. I have a history written by my Mom when she was in high school that goes back to one of our ancestors who was a guard for George Washington. My Great Great Grandmother was Ethan Allen's cousin and her brother Jedidiah fought in the war.
Well, I don't mean to go on and on about that but just thank you for a great idea.

There are several good bird field guides on the market, in bookstores. One is Sibley's, another is Stokes, and another is authored by Roger Tory Peterson. Audubon puts out a field guide to birds in both an eastern and western version, depending on the region you live in. They also have a special paperback on North American Waterfowl. Your local bookstore should have several of these. The Audubon book is fine, except that all of the photos of the birds are in one section, and the text in another, making it inconvenient to use at times when you need to ID a bird quickly. The best bird guides are those that have the pictures and text for each species together, so that all the information is right there alongside the illustration. Almost all field guides contain seasonal range maps so you know which species are most likely to be seen when in your area. National Geographic also puts out a bird book. All of the various field guides have advantages and disadvantages. It's a good idea to have more than one, because what one doesn't offer, another will, and vice-versa. Dave, can you give some examples? Examples of types of recipes? Yeah, what Carol said. If someone has a specific recipe from an old book that they just have to have for some reason then that recipe has to be evaluated on its own merits, not the date of the book. That was my point. Some of the old recipes that aren't in the later editions of the BBB were left out not because they were now unsafe but because they were low-demand/low-interest and room was needed to add new recipes. Some of them are still fine but it takes experience and a good knowledge base of canning guidelines to evaluate them. My mother's family traces back to colonial Virginia also.
Capt. Thomas Ashby served with George Washington also.
Myself and several cousins traced genealogy of the family
with copys of bibles and old deeds and titles and wedding and funeral and wills. Also thru dna testing it's also confirmed that we are descendents of Capt Thomas Ashby. None of mu close relatives seem at all interested in any of
it. I lucked out in that a grand neice liked some old pictures I have dating back as far as 150 years ago. She has deciced she wants the stuff i have.
I also ciollect old farm tools and old dishes from the teens and twentys dating back to when my father homesteaded a hundred years ago. There is a discovery Museum
here that has all kinds of relics of early settlers and mining claims and cattle ranches. and i donated some old hand cranked corn shellers and hand flour grinding tools and other stuff. I love to see young kids shelling corn and grinding wheat and churning milk and making butter at the mueeum.

Wow, you have lots of old things. Most of my Grandparents things went up for auction but I have all the old letters and photos from the 1800's.
I'm happy for you that someone will take them to cherish like we do.

Cathy, Gold dosen't always glitter, I'm sure New York Audubon would be interested, and maybe add some family History with it.
