Help with bird I.D.

Sorry, no pic here. I was out riding my golf cart in the woods/fields this morning and there were so many birds!

I'm pretty good at I.D.'ing bird sounds, but I had never heard this one before.

It was up towards the top of the tree and was making a "chip" sound. At first, I thought it was a chipmunk, since they sound like that. But then it would make another, short, more "song" sound. Sorry I can't describe it well. Then it flew out of the tree. The sun was in my eyes, but it was a bit bigger than a robin and appeared dark in color. It then flew to the top of some other trees, and was talking back and forth to other birds (the same kind). I went and got my binocs, but it never showed itself.

I live in central Indiana. The Fall migration has started, but I've never seen birds this big around here migrate.

I thought, by its shape, maybe it was a cuckoo, but the sound was nothing like the usual cuckoo sounds around here.

Can anyone guide me in the right direction of what it might be? Mostly, its sound was that "chip" sound and the other sound.

Again, sorry I can't be more descriptive.

Thanks!
