Ran into a group of friends at the lake today. I tried to stay in the shade but they were sunbathing.

Wow, those are fascinating. It is really cool to see them in a group like that. We only have Turkey Vultures around here.

Unfortunately, as we continue to doze over these animals' habitats, and put in our precious gardens, the wildlife have to find ways of surviving....I too had a rabbit in my tiny garden and it chewed a few things and flattened some others (used the thick patch of yarrow as a hiding spot)....but nothing was destroyed and the one new plant that they liked, I just put wire mesh around it so it could keep growing. Now, aliens like Japanese beetles are another story... As for hawks finding meals at birdfeeders, that's a common example of an 'ecotrap.' You're providing food for songbirds/perching birds and in turn, a hawk simply finds this area of congregating birds an opportunity for his own meal for himself or his nestlings.

Here's an article about vultures that mentions that sort of thing. It only talks about black vultures being that aggressive. Thank God I've only got turkey vultures around here where I live. As far as I know, they haven't shown any interest in my pets. And as far as I can remember, I haven't ever had one land in the trees in or next to the fenced-in yard. They seem to avoid close contact with people, unless there's a dead animal for them to eat. Here is a link that might be useful: vultures

I found this discussion by accident and thought I'd mention something about this type of bird. I agree with the rehab center. Google farmers and vultures and see what pops up. They hunt by locating vulnerable animals. This may be a newborn calf, lamb, goat, feral kittens, nestling birds, fledglings, etc. The newborn animals get their eyes pecked out. The mother can't prevent it because they hunt in large groups. The newborn animal then gets pecked to death and flesh is ripped off it's body while still alive. It's never good to see something die a slow death but in this case, I agree with the rehab center. Let nature take it's course.

Cornell Lab says Sometimes Black Vultures wade into shallow water to feed on floating carrion, or catch small fish. They occasionally kill skunks, opossums, night-herons,leatherback turtle hatchlings, and livestock including young pigs, lambs, and calves. If that's good enough for the lab at Cornell, it's good enough for me. I took this pic this morning of the 4 month old BVs. Sorry for the poor quality. They are still covered with fluff but can fly short distances. Interesting that they don't have a voice box but they can still hiss and sort of bark.

Great pics! Once, around Oct 31st there were 13 Black Vultures perching on the cedar fence posts in my neighbors field. It was very Halloweeny! I like their white shinbones.

Great pics. About two years ago we had a colony of black vultures and an occasional turkey vultures who would roost at night in the trees behind the house at the edge of a small woods. They would fly in in platoons of 10 to15 or more. It was quite a sight. We had up to 168 at one time and usually about a hundred every night for almost a year. It was definately spooky with the leaves off the trees.
