Camping in the Western US

Hi. We are planning a family camping trip from Texas through the Western US and would like to utilize the National Park Service. I have visited there website, but was unable to find what I was looking for. Has anyone ever done this? And if so... how do you plan your route? Is there a guide to ALL of the National Parks?

Thanks for the help

Have a look at this website, it might help. The photo section is real good, being able to see the campground in advance is not a bad idea. http://www.forestcamping.com/

Do you have a national parks pass? It's only $50 and will get you into all of the np's for a year. They usually give you a booklet when you buy one and it lists all of the np's and a little bit of info about each. I just bought a new pass last week. They were out of the booklets. If I can find the info they gave me, I'll post on how to request a booklet.

We went to the Davis Mountains in Texas a couple of months ago. We ran into several retired rv'ers that were traveling around to various parks. Some had just left Big Bend, stayed at Ft.Davis and visted the fort and then were driving into New Mexico to visit the Guadalupes (sp?) and Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands, Bandelier and others. These people seemed to plan a 2 or 3 night stay at each campground and then moved on after they had seen the main attractions.

We moved here to NM a couple of years ago and visit enough parks that the pass pays for itself. Of course, we target a lot of other things in the are, not just the NPS.

Looks like a great place to camp. I like camping in the rustic places, but we make sure we aren't too far from the bathrooms! I hope the evenings are cool. Those tents can get very hot inside!!! Jammer and I always took cards and dominoes and would play games by candle light at night. The boys took those lighted Nerf footballs and would have lots of fun with them at night. Hope you have lots of fun!!!

Tornado, you might find this interesting: http://ecowatch.com/2015/04/21/california-drought-colorado-river/ I've actually been thinking about this and googling for the past 15 minutes...I really ought not to spend time of this, given I have other things to do. It will never fly in California, but I had a crazy moment of thinking "WWCD". NO, not what would California do, we already know too little too late - what would China do! We just don't think big enough in this country! What about damming the ENTIRE Central Valley! Sure you might have to relocate some rare California Delta Snail to another area...as well as the entire city of Sacramento, but think of the benefits. All that rain that is lost in the wet years by flowing out to the ocean could be saved! You'd have the biggest artificial lake in the world, and agriculture could continue along its shores. Which generally happens now anyhow with certain crops, they typically grow things like oranges on the ridges anyhow, because they avoid inversion freezes that way. It would take a few years to fill of course, during which time we'd all have to buy our broccoli grown elsewhere. Lake Volta in Africa is 3200 sq. miles and is the largest reservoir in the world; the Central Valley's land area is listed as 22,000 sq. miles but of course you probably wouldn't make the lake nearly that big. Surely if they could dam 3200 sq. miles in Africa decades ago, we could manage 16,000?

in the mid-80's I was a mail carrier-so I walked about 8-12 miles per day, depending on the route I was carrying. I LOVED it. But it was just outside of the Hollywood area, so it wasn't a really scenic place. Now that I live in NW Oregon, there are more breathtaking places to hike than I can even share. But, ironically, my mobility is very limited and I can't do long or steep hikes any more. I like to do 2 mile hikes, and there are lots of gorgeous preserve areas around that have amazing walking/hiking trails. My favorite place hikes takes you over a very narrow suspension bridge to the the other side of a waterfall (Drift Creek Falls). Also, Silver Creek Falls-which has a nice, easy hike. This is the view from below of the supsension bridge at the swimming hole.

No problem! Appreciate the information! I had mistaken it for a native based only on the fact I'd found it in the wild. I only collect photos, but agree, it would work as an ornamental if not for it's reputation. The foliage was pristine whereas aphids were feasting on yuccas and everything else in the vicinity.

Here's a tip! If the natl parks like Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon North Rim are booked and you pull up and still can't get a space, Check out the backcountry of the BLM lands and Kaibab and Dixie Natl forests that are available if you are fully self contained. No services. But, what a great feeling to be out there by yourselves. There are places on the North Rim where you can camp and see millions of stars, hear the coyotes howl, and practically have the quaking aspen forest to yourselves. A little searching will pay off. Good luck!

Remember, shade is everything out west. If there is any way to get a shaded or ask for a shaded or canopied site, you will be way more comfortable in the heat.
