Do you like Walk-in-closets?
Comments (32)I've got a 4 bedroom house and 3 of those BRs have walk-in closets. My walk-ins are not large, but afford enough of storage space and easy access to everything. We have no trouble with both using the same one because we do not dally in the closet - we step in, take a set of clothes, and then exit. We have enjoyed ours - been living in this house for 30 yrs. Our first house had slider door closets. Those were ok, but the walk-in is nicer. Whichever closet you have, consider installing an enclosed light for safety. When we first moved in, the master bedroom closet was the only one with a light fixture; the others were bare bulbs. I changed the bare bulb to fixtures that enclosed the bulb for fire safety. If a bulb shatters, it can start a fire. Also, it should not happen, but if a cloth is left in contact with a bare bulb, it may burn. Having the bulb contained in a glass globe is better. These globe fixtures are relatively inexpensive....See MoreHow far would you hike to the fridge?
Comments (23)Unless the sink and non-cook usage areas are also part of the conversation, the logic of anybody's refrig placement is not clear. How far would you hike from anywhere to get an ice cube or a hunk of cheese? Listening to others (above) moves me add to my posting about the 12 foot trot from range to refrig at my place. I realize now that at our place the triangle is redefined as a trapezoid by the microwave which in our household acts as a second range opposite the first range. Additionally, "plunk space" is as important as any other part of the geometry. Without space for items to sit temporarily near the refrig, the refrig is a difficult appliance to use at all, unless you're an octopus. And work space must figure into the picture--what is the path of a tomato from purchase (or garden) to the stew pot in your house? Is it direct or in stages and is the refrig involved? As I said, I don't use many canned goods, etc but they're stored next to range, so I don't have the long pantry run that some others have. I have flour and such very near range in a baking station area. Except for eggs, bacon, butter/marg, milk, wine, most of my refrig ingredients destined for use at range just take a trip to a sink and prep area, then are transferred to the range zone afterward. That is probably why I don't commute directly between range and refrig very often. On the other hand, an unimpeded commute between seating areas and refrig is very important to me. Condiments, beverages, marg, cold foods--no need to go near range. Salads of fresh ingredients are prepared at prep sink close to refrig.--a big deal at our house. Microwave is quite near refrig so leftovers go there and then to table. If the refrig were positioned any deeper into my kitchen, it would make life very hard for grocery delivery, servicing the table, stashing cleaned produce from garden, working at sandwich/breakfast prep portion of countertop, and general access to iced tea or ice or beer when the spirit moves. All summer I haul stuff across the entire width of the house from refrig and peninsula to the deck at back of house and back again. (Yes, this is a stupidly designed house, but I won't go into that. We've done the best we can with what we have.)...See MoreWhere do you walk your dog and
Comments (18)Yesterday morning I walked my dog down to the bayou behind my house, and was surprised to see a very large alligator. It was sort of floating, because you could see it in 3 parts....the head, then the body and then the tail. I was surprised because even though I see alligators once in awhile, I usually just see their heads. I like alligators, and this one was a big one....probably easily 10' or more. A few months ago, someone killed a big alligator (12' long) that was basking on my property. It made me furious. I have no idea who did it...in fact, I didn't even know about it until I walked the dog down there and saw the body. Someone said to me, "Well, it could eat your dogs." I said, "I don't care if it ate all my dogs and half the kids in Brazoria County." An exaggeration, but closer to the truth than I might normally admit. Anyway, I went to get my phone to take a picture of the alligator, and the battery was dead, and by the time I got my camera, it was gone. I went out this morning to see if I could see it, but didn't. I looked for it with a flashlight last night....their eyes shine red...but the flashlight was pretty weak, and I didn't see anything. Anyway, my dogs don't swim in the bayou....the bank is high except in that one spot where the other alligator was basking. I hope the alligator stays safe. I normally would hope to see it again, but with so many idiots that kill things just for the hell of it, I hope it will stay out of sight....See MoreDo you have a favorite hiking boot?
Comments (19)Eld, you make a good point. They do work well for me but i guess i was wanting something more colorful and current. When I started wearing them, color wasn't the thing... also, I just don't hike in the same way anymore. Bumble, I am glad you mentioned trail runners.. I was wondering if I could make them work. I do like the ankle support of a boot but not sure I really need it. Love the idea of feeling like there's nothing on my feet. The Timberlands are comfortable but they are not light. Sue and Oco.. love the colors! Thank you all for your recommendations. I am not going to be going in-store to try them on but i have plenty of shopping resources that will let me try them in home. I am a big fan of REI but I have never returned anything there....See Moretinam61
