Camping trip

Alex and I are getting things ready for our camping trip this week. I just spent too much on fishing poles and "gear". We have the tackle already but the ex took all our old fishing poles when he moved out, so I had to buy new ones. Also bought a little food to take with us, another flashlight, sunscreen, bug spray, etc...

We're going to Land Between the Lakes in Western KY, which is about three hours from us. We've never been there before and there are a lot of areas to camp "primitively" which is what the kids want. I would prefer a bathroom nearby. Oh, well, it's only three days. I think I can survive. I did tell Alex we will be fishing/camping for more than once this summer after I spent all this money. You should see the pole he picked out, it could catch a marlen! LOL!

Washing the sleeping bags and then we have to try and get the tent back into the little carrying case it came in. We just tossed it in the garage when we came home last summer from our big trip out West.

I bought my fishing license but have to go back for Alex's, I didn't know you had to have their ssn to get a fishing license! Tells you how long it's been since I've gone fishing.

I'm now waiting for Lauren to come home, she just e-mailed me and said she'd be coming home later today. I've been trying to get ahold of her all day because she told me on Friday that she was coming home last night or this morning. Apparently her step sister just didn't want to talk to me so let the phone ring and ring.

It's going to be hotter than heck this week but I'm still getting excited!

Looks like fun Kathleen. I don't think I'd camp without a shower and bathrooms nearby though... you're braver than me! lol

I looked at one of the maps and boy, oh boy there's a lot of lakes all around the area. I don't think you'll get bored. Looks like a great place for camping and exploring.

Looks like a great place to camp. I like camping in the rustic places, but we make sure we aren't too far from the bathrooms! I hope the evenings are cool. Those tents can get very hot inside!!!

Jammer and I always took cards and dominoes and would play games by candle light at night. The boys took those lighted Nerf footballs and would have lots of fun with them at night.

Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments. I attest that the great scenery and a wonderful camera are what make the picture what it truly is! I definitely do not like to be rushed while taking them. Todd my hubby has a great way of taking care of the kids while I'm doing that. Nathan (my youngest) was an absolute nuisance about my camera. He always wants to touch it and take photos with it himself. He was telling me to take photos of him in certain places and all....I told him that he needs to save his money to get his own camera (to mess up himself). :-) (I don't let anyone else use my camera)(Todd had ruined my last dinosaur camera) so I'm very protective of it. Glad I was able to take you there! Oh, on the way to the Sequoia's we saw corn fields, orchards and many fields. (Don't know what all the crops were)WE have a state that is rich in produce. Your story about your motorcycle trip stirred some memories! I sold my MC last fall, since my wife decided she didn't like me riding off into the wilderness of W. Pennsylvania, all by myself! The fact that i turned 81 last September might have had something to do with that! so, now, all i do is sit with my memories of motor-cycling! nothing better than starting it up and riding off to strange places! He got so used to being outside and loving it that when we got home, the next day my husband opened the garage door and Ricky ran out and escaped into the neighborhood! Hubs had to chase him all over the place. Bad Doggie! He's lucky a big dog didn't eat him. We've had that happen out here...a neighbor's dog killed a smaller dog. It was awful. Glad I wasnt home when this happened.

I wish I'd seen this thread before posting mine! Yes, you can use a pressure cooker on the propane stove. I had a pressure cooker in my RV (and plan to put it in the camping equipment for this summer's trip). I have also used it on the white-gas stove (older Coleman model), when we were renovating the kitchen at home. We looked at those 12-volt refrigerators. My husband was annoyed that he got rid of his after leaving the trucking industry. Well, how could we know! Thanks for the tips on the newer ones. As far as camping reservations go: from experience, the national park campgrounds fill fast. Many of them are on the reservation system, and others (like in Arches) will require you to start trolling through the CG at daybreak, looking for departing campers. Our trip is about the same length as yours, though we are staying in motels and with friends and family instead of tent-camping. From experience with long trip tent camping, though, you'll want to get a motel room or find a truck stop with reasonably priced showers (bring shower shoes) every 3-4 days. Your trip sounds like a lot of fun -- we're heading from CA to ME via Orlando, FL, and back through MO (daughter, son-IL and new granddaughter live there). So we're going opposite of you, grin. Lydia, I don't like the idea either but I also don't like being in a campground with a ton of other people, kinda defeats the whole purpose of camping. We all now have backpacks, ugh-lol.

MaryAnn, we brought cards on our trip out West too, going to have to find them! That and Fact or Crap.

Are you crazy? Just kidding, but sure hope you can find a spot with a bathroom close by. I looked at the pictures of the camping areas and the sure are beautiful. Bet you'll have a great time.

Yes, I am crazy! LOL! The scarier part is that there is hunting permitted and now I'm worried about getting shot by some hunter. I'm going to call tomorrow and see if there are "safer" areas we can camp in.

Kath, you are such a good mommy! I love reading all your stories and hearing about the things you do with your kids. They will carry these memories with them forever and someday will do the same things with their kids!

About the hunting ... chances are real good that it is not hunting season. That usually happens in late fall and winter.

It's a beautiful area there Kath! If you can check out Patti's 1880's settlement. They have great food!
