My red spider lilies are just now coming up. Problem?

I'm so excited. I planted the bulbs last fall and after seeing others in the neighborhood blooming a week or so ago, I thought these just didn't make it. But why are they so late? Is it because they were transplanted, or too deep? Do you think they'll bloom this year?

I'm seeing foliage too from some that my neighbor shared, but I *think* that mine always bloomed before they got foliage.

Mine definitely haven't bloomed, just a little foliage showing so far.

Thanks, Tapla, (is it Al? seems so informal to my British sensibilities.. ;-) Yes, wouldn't have thought of red clay drainage probs without your postings I've read. Eternally grateful. And yes, (S)praying mantises did make me smile. Husband has actually taken portraits of them. More than of me, recently....would post but can't be bothered to work out how, and photos are somehow intrusive on this site, don't know why but I feel it instinctively. Which reminds me, I obtained info on green vitriol from a 19C publication called "New England Farmer" via the Web - obviously can't download here - but it's fascinating - any way of getting it to you without retyping? Have completely forget which web link. Useless woman I am. Biggest guerrilla warfare stuff on red spider mites is on brugmansia site, btw. Note to self: don't grow brugs.

Here in Florida, spider mites are more of a problem in the spring when it is very dry and starting to get hot. The rest of the year, I never see them. In fact, I usually don't see them in the spring unless I buy a new rose and introduce them into the garden. I believe there are spider mite predators in the garden that kill them eventually if I just keep spraying them with water. Here spider mites aren't a big problem. Other than blackspot, heat, nematodes, and lack of soil fertility, chilli thrips are the biggest problem. I'd worry about global warming bringing those north if I were you. I wondered where they found those odd rose varieties they used in the study until I noticed it was from the Middle East. I wish they used all one color of rose so we could tell if the color was the reason some varieties resisted the spider mites better, or if it was something else.

they're a great bulb that multiplies well if happy. ask anyone who has a good patch for some next june or so & they'll probably happily give you some. let me know before the next swap & i can bring some. they go dormant from june til sept, when they bloom w/o foliage. it follows shortly after, to look like a liriope all winter til about may/june. they also come in yellow & white, but those are a lot more rare & expensive. aka hurricane lilies b/c they normally bloom in sept after a heavy rain from a storm. and, hey, imagine this- spider lilies. my pet name for them is the horton hears a who flower. nekkid ladies are normally refering to the lycoris squamigera(sp?)(the pink ones that look like a crinum flower).

Red spider mites or aphids?!! My tomatoes are curling up!

Initially I thought it was the roundup that my well intentioned friend sprayed along my fence line (same friend who raked through the pepper seeds I had just planted!), but after seeing the little red bugs and reading up on the damage they do to tomato plants, I kind of let him off the hook and settled on the aphids being to blame. I tried to enlarge the pics, but it wouldn't let me save it "big." They have antenae, which the spider mites don't have, so I guess they must be aphids. The twisty growth is terrible, the leaves are now tight little balls on most of my plants. I have had blossom end rot on one plant, so I applied lime, but that hasn't solved the aphid problem, nor has it done anything to prevent new growth from curling up. I have recently applied a soapy mixture of insecticide, but have not reapplied the sevin dust. I am now in the process of "pruning" the twisty leaves off, but the plants I've done this to look like little spindly green sticks in the dirt. What now?!!! Do I dig them up and throw them out or wait, pray, and hope for the best? Thank you sooo much!!!

Mine bloomed and the flowers are now dead/dying with the foliage coming in. I'd wait until the foliage has come up and then see how deep they're planted. Maybe they needed another year to recover from the shock of being out of the ground for however long before you planted them last fall?

I also have red Spider Lilies and find that even in my limited space garden beds, they tend to bloom at staggered times during the Fall. Some were blooming at the start of September with the stragglers only starting about 10 days ago.
Also, during the first year after being planted, some bulbs will/might tend to bloom on their own schedule rather than at the normally prescribed seasons. Usually not an issue for succeeding years...

They weren't out of the ground more than 20 minutes. I moved them from a neighbor's yard directly to my yard. They were blooming at the time.

My experience is that if you got foliage first, you won't get flowers this year. And when I've dug mine up to share, it took a year or two to get flowers. Also, there is no rhyme or reason as to why they bloom some years and not others although once they start, you'll get blooms almost every year. The best thing to do is just ignore them and let them surprise you next year. Most of mine bloomed, but not all of them. I know your frustration. I look forward to seeing them every year and when I only get foliage, I get really bummed.

Mine aren't blooming either, but are showing foliage so it's nada for this year. I haven't tested the idea, but I read that the dormant lycoris bulbs need water during the summer to induce them to bloom. Maybe it's something for us to try next year. My school house lilies bloomed so it seems they make do with less water; that is -- IF the theory is correct.

I had blooms of all my different types of Spider lilies, blood lilies at the same time. Usually they are staggered.

one clump is blooming, one clump bloomed a couple of weeks ago, one clump has leaves but never bloomed this year and the yellow bloomed in May. I`ve tried talking to them about this not blooming together thing but they could care less.

I was truly amazed at the group party. When they stagger it, one does get a LONGER show. Now if I could only get my rain lilies to bloom after EVERY rain.

I have the white spider lilies. Mine bloomed early Sept. maybe? But mine always have foliage until frost then they put out new foliage early spring, and I have foliage first, whether or not I get blooms. Maybe the white ones are completely different animals. I am certain of one thing. I NEED RED SPIDER LILIES!! Beautiful! Congratulations!
