More than likely you are talking about Lycoris radiata or naked ladies. Mine are blooming right now although this year they are later than usual--most likely due to the hotter and drier weather we had this past summer.

they're a great bulb that multiplies well if happy. ask anyone who has a good patch for some next june or so & they'll probably happily give you some. let me know before the next swap & i can bring some. they go dormant from june til sept, when they bloom w/o foliage. it follows shortly after, to look like a liriope all winter til about may/june. they also come in yellow & white, but those are a lot more rare & expensive.

aka hurricane lilies b/c they normally bloom in sept after a heavy rain from a storm. and, hey, imagine this- spider lilies. my pet name for them is the horton hears a who flower. nekkid ladies are normally refering to the lycoris squamigera(sp?)(the pink ones that look like a crinum flower).

One just popped up in a friends lawn and he asked me for an ID on it and whether or not he should keep it. No idea where it came from, but I said move it and when he gets a healthy colony going I can have a few! Seems like a nice late season surprise, even if it doesn't last long! -Ais.

They put up foliage in the winter that looks like border grass then it fades and dies out in late spring/early summer. This can add some much needed winter greenery. I like to randomly throw them in amongst my daylilies so those areas have some foliage during the winter. I don't like seeing them planted in rows along a walkway or around a border. The random look is much nicer. Also, don't be disappointed if when you move them they skip a season before blooming again. Once they are in a spot they like, they will divide quite readily. There is also a yellow and a white variant. Both are a bit harder to find, I don't have either one yet, but I am looking. Our local zoo/botanical garden has a few and they look really nice. Enjoy!

I love them, and have adored them all my life.. I did not know they came in yellow or white.. That would be a treat for sure. I have a yard full of them, and frequently move them... They are very reliable bloomers, and a welcome plant for the fall. There is always just one bloom per bulb, and they don't last very long..
