Cedar Waxwing fledgeling

This morning I looked out my kitchen window and saw this little guy. He sat almost under my son's car for a long time, and I was worried about him. I went out and placed him in my hand and took him out into an open area nearby, and soon his parents showed up.

I placed him in a soil-filled planter (no flowers) and hoped for the best. Soon, he jumped up on the rim and started calling for his parents. The next time I looked out the window, both his parents were feeding him. I ran to get my camera, but they were gone when I came back.

I haven't seen the little guy all day, so hopefully he's out there trying out his wings.

Cedar Waxwings are timing with their nestlings on the oncoming of their favored berries to feed their young, not sure what that would be in your area, find out and then go with this plant. Cedars just about eating anything when it comes to berries, just make sure this fruit is ripening at the time of hatchlings. Here it's the native Saskatoon's, Cedar's should just about now build their nest here. As for Winter food, they like chokecherries, crab apples and some mountain ash.

They seem to come and go. One year I had them most of the summer. They had a nest in a white pine by the house........which was close to a black cherry tree that had tons of berries that they liked. I think it all depends on if they can find a good food source nearby. They are very handsome birds!

Those little birds are so adorable. & be on the alert: In spring, they get "drunk" on fermenting berries (I forget what kind of plant), & land on the ground, reeling, easy game for any predator. All they need is a safe haven until they sober up!

I also never see the waxwings at my feeders, but they do appear when the winterberries are ripe, along with robins. The flocks will come and devour the berries and then go off to wherever they go next. Someone who posts on this forum, Konrad I think, has experience and wonderful pictures of cedar waxwings in Canada so he would have information for you. Claire

hey Cathy...was just thinking of you and your chickie as I again scrubbed the blue poops off the front concrete steps. It's been such a marvelous year for the cherry trees and the cedar WWs are making the most of a good thing.
In a week or so the whole yard will smell like a winery!

What a mess it would be if we had a boom cherry year at the same time the periodical cicadas emerged!!

I remember the first time I went out on our deck to find it covered in purple splotches everywhere. I couldn't figure out what the heck happened. Now, when I see that, I get excited, 'cause I know they're around! Those berries sure run right through 'em.
