You probably should have a filter if you have fish. Figure the life expectancy of goldfish that go home to a fish bowl and then you don't feel so bad taking the chance. At Alexandria's near Carthage, they have lotus in a big rubber tub; they are beautiful. You can have plants without the pump and filter. But Once you start you can't stop. My friend's neighbor threw away a fiberglass form that leaked. I had that for a while; it was UGLY but I like the dragonflies, toads, frogs and goldfish. In that pond everything died one July when it got hot and nasty. This pond is bigger but I think for safety a filter would be good. I can run mine when I feel the necessity. I think the spitter spraying water helps and a pillow is a filter of sorts. Now I want to expand and make another pond; it is very addictive.

I think I had a senior moment here! I took it from inside the kitchen, looking east. I used the zoom with Macro setting. I think it is the macro that blurs the background. I am cheating on the camera and not using the manual much. A sweet person on the Cooking Forum has posted a course on how to take inside food pictures. I am reading and rereading it and followed her suggestions for the bird pictures. The only thing is I can't control the light like you cant taking food photos. I have vowed to learn to use this darned camera beside pointing and shooting. She goes into all of the settings. I think they are listed on FAQ on cooking forum. Here is a link that might be useful: photo tips blog.

It's really hard to tell from the picture but I think the first one is a house finch. They also have a notch just not as deep. Purple finches (males) have a raspberry colored wash all along the back of their necks and wings that HF's don't have. HF are not native to this area but have spread all over the US due to being kept as pets in the past and are very common. The female PF's have a much more striking head marking so you can identify them that way. Here is a link that might be useful: Differentiate house vs. purple finch

Awesome! Love the finch pic. He looks mad at something. What kind of camera and lens do you have? And how far away were you to get waxwings???? They never let me get close at all.

Hi I have a Nikon D 5000 and the lens is a nikon 70 300
this is not a bush it is a tree and it is big not tall but wide I might have some winter picture of it will check and send it in or i will take a picture of the tree
also the birds are about 7 or 8 ft from me so I can zoom them in pretty near to me.
