Blue Ribbon for Green Doctors

I entered some tomatoes in the county fair (after being inspired by a member's post last summer) and my Green Doctors won a blue ribbon for the best tasting cherry tomato! The whole experience was a lot of fun and I highly recommend it.

Someone else's Sungold won the category of best looking....oh well, Sungolds are pretty and I'd rather have my tomatoes taste good than look good. ;) And now that I understand the rules, I will enter big heirlooms next year as well as cherries.

Dude you are spot on, GD is the best tasting cherry in the garden. Black Cherry and Sun S.& G. are good and sweet but dont have the depth that GD has. GD will be for sure a main stay in my garden for many years. Nice job my fellow Bay Arean! And what fair was this, I want to attend next year!

I usually make B&B every other year -- even a small recipe is a lot of jars! The slices don't *have* to be refrigerated, but heat seems encourage fermentation. I've never had any ferment if left out overnight in a cool room. The salt draws the excess moisture from the cucumber, so it's important that every slice have been in contact with salty water. One rinses afterwards to eliminate the excess salt (taste a slice, if it's too salty, rinse again). For crisper home-made pickles, Â¼ teaspoon of alum can be added to the pint jar before filling. One can freeze cucumber/onion slices in a plain vinagrette. Use a flattish container and be sure the liquid covers all the cukes, easiest if you press a bit of clear wrap on top of the mixture. This winter, thaw in the fridge and serve as a side dish. Interestingly, they stay as crisp as fresh-picked. As far as I know any vinagrette will do, but I measure 1/3 cup cider vinegar into a marked glass jar, add enough granulated sugar to bring the level to 1/2 cup, and then enough canola oil to raise the level to 3/4 cup. Add salt, pepper, 1 tablespoon dill weed, and shake vigorously. This is usually sufficient to cover 2 pints of thinly sliced cukes and onions; for variety add slivers of green or red peppers. I've also frozen cuke slices into the recipe liquid for sweet dills. They aren't quite like the real dill pickle, but very good.

Ken, my GGs were planted in two installments: First, three rather nice, larger specimens from Botany Shop went in up in the well-drained field soil where my primary tree seedling planting is going on. That would have been maybe four years ago. To tell the truth, I did not see these three on my visit, as they are in amongst lots of other rapidly growing pine, spruce and larch. Then two years ago, I put in three more but this time, downhill in a decidedly wet area, right adjacent to native Thuja o's. Those are the ones within which you can see such a huge difference. Who knows, maybe these are less well adapted somehow on account of being down in the swamp. I can't see why that would be so, but just thought I'd throw that in. I also have mentioned Chamaecyparis lawsoniana "Oregon Blue", of which three little guys were planted last spring. We also planted one of these at my son's house in Cedarburg, a town not far from whaas and TJ's area. All of these look toasted-a not-too-surprising outcome. Mine up north were snow-covered all winter until just recently, where the tips became exposed. If those tips indicate anything, these are in trouble. Son's looks probably dead. Of course, all are being left in place for now. I never had real high hopes for that particular experiment. I'd bet yours will go on as if nothing happened. This winter may have helped us mark a line on the map for that plant's suitability. For my part, I'm more happy than anything....to see the utter ease with which most of my stuff has made it through-Norway spruce, red pine, white pine, hybrid larch (I think!), uh what am I forgetting? Oh yeah, the Thuja o's! We're going to dig some more little ones if it ever warms up a bit and drys out, to be moved up into groupings in the main field planting area. All of those we've done previously have survived and thrived. Plus, most mysteriously, deer leave them be, completely. That's odd, but I'm glad of it, of course. Good luck whaas. +oM

my finger nails grow long only in the late spring and summer (and i guess into the fall!)... so i will occasionally paint them in the summer--i would prefer my nails to be long and lovely and painted in the winter! but, when i do paint them i only use clear or some subtle shade...i find darker/brighter color on my fingers to be very jarring and distracting-sortof like dark/bright lipstick (on me). once summer arrives i will paint my toenails- mainly because 'it is the thing to do' ... after a few days, i get used to seeing them painted! i only use shades of pink, red, nude or coral. i wouldn't use blue, black or green- would make me feel self conscious... i view those as colors for the young and i think look abit 'inappropriate' on older women-like they're trying too hard... take that for what it's worth--my opinion only!!

All finished. I opted for the white ribbon and the white tacks (thought it was busy enough all ready). It was a very easy project and the dots made it simple to line everything up. Boy, DD is going to be suprised when she gets home from school. Just need to hang it up now. This was a great recycling project since I used her old cork board for a fresh new look.

Was there a tomato tasting at the San Mateo County Fair??! Aargh, if there was, I wish I'd gone. I missed some sort of tomato festival out in Vacaville or thereabouts too last weekend. I am so bummed.

Damon - as lovetogarden2008 pointed out, yes, it was the San Mateo county fair. They take entries from anyone on the peninsula, not just San Mateo county. Although, I think I've just hurt my chances next year by publicizing that! The weather in Santa Clara is better for tomatoes that what we have here...

Spaghetina - the tasting was conducted by the judges only. It's not a big public tomato tasting. You might want to try the tomato tasting at Kendall Jackson winery in Sonoma(held in Sept) although the tickets are quite pricey.

I looked into that Kendall Jackson tasting, but holy COW, the tickets are expensive! I have a feeling my money will be better spent at the farmer's market buying up the last of the CP's that my favorite stand is producing, even though they'll only be here for another few weeks or so. :( Then I guess I'll have to start making the drive over to the CSM market Weds. and Sat. and contend with the crazy crowds for my tomato fix.

I am clueless as to what I'll do about my addiction once summer is over. I'm afraid for my well being.

Looking volunteer gardeners to lead tours of the Kendall-Jackson Culinary Gardens for the 13th Annual Heirloon Tomato Festival. This is a benefit for the North Bay School Garden Network.

Yeah, agreeing with Rain. Mulio frequently posts that he hates the taste of that variety.

I suppose it's not surprising some people don't remember those comments. There are a lot of us here, and none of us reads every thread, let alone remembers every post.

Not trying to start any arguments here, just hopefully to clarify a bit. And heaven knows, I don't win many prizes for tact....

I think it was taken as an insult to the grower?

Which it wasnt meant to be.

Rather an explanation for why someone from the bay area might choose that variety as a "winner".

Ill give you that DG is sweet but that is all. It's background character is what I dont like. Give it a moment or two and you notice an unpleasant after taste. If you have ever tasted a green wild species tomato, you'll taste that again in DG.

First, geesh Â this was just a post to share my good news at winning a ribbon in the county fairÂ.

I read mulioÂs post and was indeed insulted on two counts: (i) as a grower of a tomato that actually won a prize. I chose to submit Green Doctors simply because it was the best looking truss of tomatoes in my garden that was ripe that day. (ii) as a resident of California. Just because we have medical majijuana doesnÂt mean we are all fruitcakes or high as a kite.

I have been a regular reader of this forum for the past 2-3 years - I pretty much recognize everyone who posts on a regular basis. However, I donÂt think any of us can assume that anybody else recognizes us or remembers our taste preferences. While there are many members I do recognize, mulio is not one of them, and I had no idea of his dislike of green when ripe tomatoes. His loss, I must say ( in regards of the green when ripe).

Insulted ha! Learn to take a joke...this is a message board. I would be so happy if I had a great time and won a ribbon. Looks like an interesting tomato, congrats! :-)

Congradulations! Wow- to get a Blue ribbon in any contest is a result of dedication and hard work.
