Just curious-- Did anybody get any cool camping gifts for the holidays? One of my coworkers gave me a little bag with some cute little odds and ends--like an emergency poncho, a compass/whistle thingy, and a snake bite kit! How well they know me!

I got a similar gift, a water bottle (nalgene/lexan type) with all sorts of must-have supplies stuffed in it: emergency "blanket", whistle, waterproof matches, first aid things....I forget what else, really cool. Hope we won't ever need any of it but it'll sure come in handy if we do!
I also got 2 new field guides to help identify things, I could spend hours studying them, so much to learn!

Hey all,
I gave hubby some things for his back packing trip to the Grand Canyon in May. He got some ready to eat light weight meals you just add water to. I gave him a poncho, flashlight, new binoculars, heavy socks, a new fork that extends to 2 ft, little things for him since these are the things he always loses. The boys gave him a great pack and hiking boots. He is set, now he can't wait to use them. I got a digital camera to use for camping, I always say if only I had a camera. Now I need to find out how to load them onto here. Someday!!!

We had the same problem for years. We have a group of seven couples (all close in age). We would take trips together once every year or so but during the year we would take turns hosting a monthly dinner. Of course this always necessitated a hostess gift. All of us are comfortably off and at our age have everything (material) that we want or need. It drove me crazy because I was constantly being gifted with craft type items. I am just not into cutesy things and I had a difficult time coming up with items that I thought the other ladies would enjoy or use. I failingly ended up giving food items or fresh flowers. We all finally came to a consensus that we should stop doing hostess gifts and at Christmas put funds together to donate to a charity. Thank goodness! The pressure every month is off and we can give to those in need. It's a win/win.

I got home safely yesterday about 1:30 and promptly took a nap! I'm still unpacking and sorting through things. Thanks to Jennifer, Beverly, Tim, Jim and everyone who helped to make this retreat such a pleasant experience. There are some wonderful folks on the Cheerio staff who always see that our stay is carefree and free of problems as is possible. It is so easy for me to go to our retreat, but I know other campers here have to make more of an effort to attend and I am so glad that they manage to make it year after year. So, I'm off to work today, but I can tell you, I'd much rather be having my early morning coffee in the quiet of the dining hall at Cheerio right now! Teresa

camp Evelyn or camp Abraham Darby?

As the years have gone by, I've become solidly in camp Abraham Darby. First of all, Abe reblooms for me. As time has gone on, Evelyn has stopped reblooming for me. In contrast, Abe's reblooming has gotten better. Then, as Brandon says, Abe's color is richer. This is not necessarily a better thing, but I like it better than Evelyn's hues in my garden. I've seen Evelyn in other gardens which have colors that I like more. It's true that Abe has big thorns, but they aren't particularly numerous, and they are actually attractive (to me) on the new growth when the sun shines through them. I like the bush form of Abe better than Evelyn. It's more sturdy, whereas Evelyn is more wispy. Both Evelyn and Abe have beautiful fragrances, although they are different. Neither has much fragrance on hot days especially in the afternoon. I call it a draw in that department. Abe responds quite well to water and fertilizer, by growing and blooming. Evelyn does not. Abe has bigger flowers for me. Evelyn has more of a romantic look to her flowers. Abe's flowers are more formal. So a draw in that department. Abe still catches my eye and makes me catch my breath. So it's Abe for me. But I still want both. Because I keep thinking that maybe I can figure out how to get Evelyn to perform better for me. I still consider Evelyn to be the quintessential English rose. I've posted these pictures before:

This thread has been so helpful, thanks all! It led me to look for a dollhouse for my great-niece. In a strange turn of events, though, I found two houses that *I* want … as in, to actually live in. The first house I found has a working elevator, party patio, hot tub, potting shed, and third story telescope room. Party patio with lights: Built-in potting shed … heaven: Hot tub … I’ll get different towels: Thank goodness she checked with Design Dilemma first and didn’t make the fatal decision to put a mirror over the mantel: It really works? Look at that tile! The one above will be my city home. Here’s my country home: Get away from my house, kid! BUILT-IN STABLES HELLO … This stove is nicer than mine: Anyway, thanks to this thread, I will be moving into my dream homes after Christmas. I got a compass thingy, too. Mine attaches to a zipper and has a compass at one end and a thermometer at the other. Got it from my brother in law. My cousin gave me a gift cert. to REI store. Nearest one is in Vegas. hmm..
and excuse to go to vegas?

Since we camp in a trailer and are seniors, we tend to get gifts for the yard at the campground or bird books. This year we got a nice big thermometer with birds on it to hang outside. We got some decorative stepping stones too.
