What got the babies/eggs?

I had a finch nest in a hanging basket on my porch. Checked on a Monday and 3 eggs had hatched with 1 egg unhatched. 5 days later the nest was completely empty. The basket was hanging between 2 metal pillars, I do not see how a cat or raccoon could have climbed to it. I'm guessing it was another bird? What kind of birds do that?

I also had bluebirds nesting in a empty newspaper box which is attached to my mailbox. I am pretty sure there were eggs in there, but now it has been abandoned.

not knowing where you are at it could be a wide range of things. squirrels and raccoons and snakes need to climb up so not too likely but many birds such as crows and jays and magpies and ravens will raid nests and eat eggs or babys. some wrens and sparrows will destroy eggs and even kill babys. or just punch holes in eggs so they do not hatch. some raptors and owls will catch and eat the babys.

Sorry, we are in central MO. I know there are owls in the neighborhood.. we don't really get crows, magpies or ravens.

By the way, terryr. I am so RUDE!!! I ran across the tail-end of the post regarding my bee experience and I mean to THANK YOU for the glowing compliments regarding my posts. Writing was always something that came easily for me, but it never really occurred to me that it could be anything more until I joined the forums and found a sounding board for my experiences. It came as quite a shock, the first time someone on here expressed a liking for my writing style because I always felt like my redneck roots were showing throughout every paragraph.. But I realized that there is such a thing as a selective redneck, meaning I have retained the nobler qualities of one born and raised in a rural, small-town environment and distanced myself from the less admirable tendencies such as stringing a cat up beind your pickup truck and driving around backroads shooting at any set of glowing eyes until your sixpack runs out. I guess it is a combination of this selective red-neckedness and a honest love for nature AND for learning that comes out in my writing. ? I don't know. I never really thought about it but in any case I am glad you enjoy it, Terryr.

I'm so happy and excited for you!! I don't have eggs yet, but the nest looks complete. I can't wait till I have some young too! Looks like your blues have a good home with all the fancy trimmings! I hadn't known about a spooker until this year (have one ready to go now) but I used the fishing line, which keeps the babies alive but the male ended up getting killed in defence of the nest :( She raised that brood and had another brood soon after with another male. He ran off the young so I don't know if they would have survived so young. Possibly more destruction indirectly by the dang HOSP. This year is much differnt...

Congrats, and break out the candy cigars! Sometimes they remove unhatched eggs, sometimes not. I like to wait at least 3 extra days to see if it will hatch, but after that, a nestling would be so far behind the others, it would not likely be able to compete and would not survive anyway. You don't have to remove unhatched eggs, but usually I do. They are SO fragile, though, it must be done very carefully. You don't want to crush it and soil the nest, which would surely attract ants and other problems. You can use a spoon; I have a nice plastic one that came with MiracleGro that has 2 ends, one end is very deep and holds the egg nicely so it won't roll out. BlueBars

Some of the eggs are old and some are new. I'm not going to eat them and risk getting sick. I know some people think I'm wasting good eggs, but I don't like the taste of duck eggs, I don't bake that much, and with my lupus, I can't take chances like that. Honestly, I didn't want them there in the first place and we have enough Muscovys around here that a few less won't hurt anything. There wll be more eggs laid more babies hatched. I'm just going to throw them in the garbage if she doesn't show up tomorrow. She showed up yesterday, looked all around very closely, then left. She did not sit at all. The papa duck came back this morning, but when he saw she wasn't there, he left too. I'm sure she is just spooked and is abandoning the nest. No biggie.

Lidia, I bet you have Blue Jays,they are often the guilty ones.

We do have Blue Jays... never imagined they would do that!

The Bluebirds are back in the newspaper box, so maybe they are trying again?

Blue jays are pretty birds,but will eat and raid nests.I have many blue jays in my backyard and I make sure my nesting boxes are properly secure. After all this is the first time we've had white breasted nuthatches in our box!

Could you set up a proper box for the Bluebirds? The link below will take you to an awesome site that teaches you all you need to know about hosting Bluebirds. I'm just afraid if they nest in the paper box again, it will have the same result. Most anything can reach them in there. Best of luck.

I had some heartbreaking episodes on my porch with House Finch. No longer will I encourage them to nest anywhere on my porch. Cat's can jump at all angles to clean out a nest. Once, the mother was left 'in pieces' on my door mat. Squirrels, coon, snakes, and even large raptors, (crows, ravens, etc.) will dine on the babies.

In the bird world, it's sometimes "I'll eat your babies before you eat mine." They usually strike at dawn ... it's not fun to know some things in nature ;(
